Relays for twin headlights

Postby Dell'Orto » Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:02 pm

I'm in the process of converting my KE70 sedan to semi sealed headlights, and figured I should probably put relays in while I'm there.
It has the twin head light front, so my question is:
Do I need 1 relay for both low/high beams, or would I need a relay for each light?

OMG so shiny!

Are you going to run single filament low beam lights or double?
Why do you want relays? You can end up with no high beam dash light if you wire them wrong.

Ok,

The big question is,

The inner lights which are normally high beam only,

the lights that you are fitting, what buld base do they take,
as if they are H1, H3 etc and earth through base of the light and frame etc,
then it is a real drama to do.
The Toyota headlights are double switched.

You ned to switch the power on and off to turn them on and off,
and switch the earths on and off to change beams.

Best thing to do is buy a pre-wired headlight upgrade kit if that is the case.

I had one in my old Ke70 roda car,
well worth it for a light upgrade.

Pulled it out when i sold it too, and possibly still have it.

H4 lows, H1 highs. I figure a relay isnt a silly idea given the factory headlights would have been a 30w/40 sealed beam, and have now gone to two 60w low beam and 4 55w high beam (Thats how it works on H4's innit?)

h1 bulbs = bugger! The fact (as Matt says) that they earth though the base doesn't make it easy, a little thinking is required and it's too late for that tonight! Maybe an extra relay for the inner lights.
