MR2 Turbo Exhaust Options

Postby Heylin » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:53 pm

Got a rattle coming from my beloved Fujitsubo Legalis R, new price is about $2000 so im looking at following options. Advice appreciated

Car is running 210Kw at the wheels. Current exhaust is 3" upto the muffler with twin 2.5" exits.

Option 1 - Rebuild)
Can mufflers be cut open and rebuilt ? ie repacked, baffles, pipes etc replaced.

Option 2 - Re-make)
Can a fabricator make my muffler based on the dimensions and internals of my current one ?

Option 3 - Replace with bolt on cat back)

Based on the Pheonix power design this is about the only one I can afford ($590NZD delivered) and I can fit myself. Although some say its loud, but the Youtube sound clips sound great.

Option 4 - Custom)

If option 3 is to loud id like to have something custom built out of 2 larger cannon style mufflers like this (TKO system with 7" Magnaflows). Will be louder than my Fujitsubo with baffle design but quieter than XS-power system with its smaller mufflers.

I have no idea what sort of mufflers to go for (Magnaflow, Flowmaster, M&H, Flowsound, Adrenaline-R (NZ made), Dytech)

Do all barrel style mufflers sound loud ? even if im running 2 ?

HELP !! this rattle is driving me nuts and after spending 8K on the car last year fixing it up I want to enjoy it this summer.

My budget is $500 - $650max and car will be capped at 300 RWHP when it gets its tune so must be able to flow well.

Cat-back from toyspeed sponsors drivenperformance is the best option to suit your budget.

Or a buddyclub spec II from fortyone

Phoenix Powers is win. But becareful of ground clearance issues (if it's an exact Phoenix powers copy)

For me I'd go Apex'i GT kind of exhaust, dual barrels = weight = sad face.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Yeah had that option yesterday but had to make a decision on the spot to get "Special price", anyway its cheaper from XS-power shoud I decide, all comes form the the same manfacturer in China (Japspeed, XSpower, SSAC) all the same.

One of the MR2 club guys said it was 105DB and failed warrent so might be to loud for my liking compared to my Legalis R.

Id like to know where all these Driven Performance SW20 exhausts are, would love to hear before buying, surely if DP order 3 lots a year then there must be some out there.

Most likely ill save weight compared to my Legalis R :) its beefy as. Plus I love my dual exhaust tips for that balanced look.

I vote for cut open and re-pack your current one

Any of the cannon options will be loud and you imo look stupid by having a cannon muffler

Much perfer what you have now

I manged to get a good price on 2 of these (without tips) made to my size specs (7"X18"). Its a Kiwi made product, very high quality and good design + a lifetime warrenty.

Ive decided to go for the TKO style exhaust but using the Adrenaline R mufflers instead of the crappy looking (in comparison) Magnaflows.

The Adrenaline R quality is just amazing and the guys down there in Hastings are ever so helpful so backup service is going to be A1.

The 7" version of the TKO system is the quietest of the 3 sizes they do and should be somewhere between stock and the loud Departure2 style one.

Adrenaline R use a perforated tube with louvres style perforations which are supposed to chop up the sound a bit more making for a quieter exhaust with good flow.
