SW20 Engine/gearbox Mounting

Postby ee904age » Tue Feb 02, 2010 6:24 pm

I've posted this on MR2OC to no avail.
Ive got the 3SGTE mounted and running in my SW, but of the four bolts that attach bellhousing to block, I can only figure out 3. The one in question is on the bottom "wing" of the block towards the rear of the car. It seems to have a thread in the block leading to a blind hole in the box. I cant figure it out since the engine and box were out of the car and split when I got the car.

Any ideas people????

sounds about right it has 3 long bolts from the gearbox side then one from the engine side through to the box which is a shorter smaller bolt if i recall correctly

Thats what I thought, but it goes against my limited engineering experience that it would have a thread in both the box AND the block, since unless they tapped the thread with the box bolted to the engine, the chances of the threads lining up with eachother are pretty slim.

oh wait what? i didnt read your first post correctly. so you have a threadded hole on both the block and the box?

if thats the case and the block thread isnt larger than the box thread then i would drill out the block thread and bolt it just to the box thread from the engine side.

if the is no thread on the box then i dont know what toyota was thinking or what the guy operating the milling machine was drinking when he made the box but i want some.

Depens on which 3S-GTE.

According to the EPC...

Gen II has three 12mm*55mm bolts and one 10mm*43mm bolt that go through from the gearbox side, it also has two 10mm*22mm bolts and one 8mm*18mm bolt, at least one of which goes through from the engine side, not sure about the others.

That must be it, Its a gen 2. So even though theres a 12mm thread in the block, it just put a 10mm bolt through bypassing that thread and screwing into the box. The rest of those bolt Im guessing hold the inspection plate on the bottom of the bellhousing.
