Toyota Caldina GTT missing issue

Postby stevedabomb » Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:01 pm

Hi there my brother has an auto caldina gtt and for quite some time its been having an issue with it.

When boosting the car starts to surge a bit feels like its missing, off boost the car runs smooth as - doesnt matter if cars hot or cold

Someone told him it could be spark plugs or leads but he doesnt wanna fork out money on stuff they may not need to be replaced

Any one come across this issue before and any ideas what it may be? fuel pump? cheers

Spark plugs, leads, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter?

Could be a number of things, since it only happens on boost it leads me to think its a fuel issue

But spark plugs is always a good start

You will have to use platinum if you don't want to change normal ones every 10k.
Platinum you pay ~$50 put once and forget for 5-10years.

you dont gap platinums or iridiums, or really any plug for that matter. if you buy NGK's or densos with the correct part# they will already have the correct gap, 0.8mm for caldina GTT.
maybe if you buy champions you'd need to gap em as im pretty sure they don't come pre gapped but thats cuz theyre only gud for lawnmowers and old V8's

Just don't buy champions ;).

Denso/NGK are best ones, and incidentally is what OEM are.

hey you can still buy champion plugs... but just as Burning Angel said; just for lawnmowers and old v8s.

NGK or Denso FTW

Can't go wrong with $4 NGK plugs.

Try closing the gap a little and see if it helps.
If it goes fine then it will probably be the coils. Very common problem with engines that have coil over plugs.

take it to a good shop with a scanner and they should be able to find whats causing it, other wise you could be replacing something and not fix the problem.

Hey

I have been having a similar issue (details posted under diff thread, still unresolved) but was curious whether anyone has heard the following:

If the gap in the spark plug is bigger than 0.9 then it can cause the coil to burn out.

Also, we were told by Toyota & a auto elec that they are unable to read the gen IV motors (we have a 3stge) as there hasn't been an update released for it...

Has anyone else had this info?

Just check for error codes the old fashioned way!

Earth out the pin in the diagnostic connector (TE1? TC1?) to the earth pin in there, and count the flashes on your check engine light, look up the codes to find out what they mean.

Sorted.

how many kms has it done? if its over 100k, and you have had it since before 100k, then you should change the plugs regardless.

i do remember zak on these forums, who worked at giltrap toyota (and may still do) saying that he had seen a bunch of altezzas with 3SGE's that hadn't had plugs at 100ks cooking coil packs too. i guess the gap gets a bit big as the plugs wear and makes the coil overheat.

Hi
Yup, apparently the old fashioned way is the only way you can check them....except the Toyota guys didn't know what codes 14 & 15 were! Took an auto elec to give us that detail (most of the sites on the web only had 14, it was the 15 that we couldn't find).

Car has done 120km, cam belt changed prior to us purchasing so no idea bout the spark plugs. See "99 Caldina GTT engine missing and car stalls" thread for full run down on whats happening.

I wish it were as simple as replacing spark plugs but unfortunately, in my case that didn't work. Curious though - how do you know if a coil has been burnt out?

I have the same problem with mine but a 5 speed one 14, 15 is ignition coil amplifier one and two, yes any auto elec can test them and they will more than likely test fine they break down when hot, which he can not test for

One thing i have found is mine does it more when hot, i have replaced my 2 of my ignition coil amplifiers and the spark plugs, and problem still there, i have another two ignition coil's on order to do 3,4 just incase it is other two, these are not cheap and have a retail price at Toyota of $650ish there are no after market ones made as yet,

Im still working on my problem no one can really provide me with answers, fault comes back check engine light comes on at dash while driving but no fault code gets logged in ecu its strange!! I have had 5 diff scan tools on it even with fault present and car running like a bag of crap, none of them picked up fault code not even a pending fault

I will keep ya posted if i find answer dunno if this info will help you or not
