ST202 manual gearbox filling...

Postby peas » Sat Apr 10, 2010 5:16 pm

Hello all.

I have noticed that my girlfriends Celica seems to sound "dry" from the box and its shifting isn't what I would call smooth. Anyway I undid the 24mm bung on the front of it and poked in a curled over piece of metal and didn't manage to get it into any oil (none on it when I pulled my make believe dipstick back out anyway) so I'm assuming that it is dry or close to it and is it correct to fill it until it comes level with the filling bung... as in just starts seeping out?

Thanks guys.

Yeap, might as well drain it, then fill it back up till its at the bung.

Yup correct. I normally leave the filler open and fill it from the top (speedo sender/reverse sensor) until it starts to seep out the side.

Did you drain it? You aren't really supposed to mix old/new oil. They're just under 3 liters from memory.

Yeah mixing could be a bad idea if that's what you did. Who knows what grade of oil is in there to start with as well.

Mixing is bad especially in gearbox oil as they could use different chemistry in their friction additives for synchros that could react together.
