bigport AFM 4agze improvements

Postby mr30%jr » Mon Apr 19, 2010 5:45 pm

I bought an aw11 S/C seems like the headgasket is poked, so i might tear it down as its done 195,000ks.

What improvements can i do to the engine while its out and apart.

Is it the norm to just rering it, do all the bearings, and clean everything up?

is it worth while shaving the head?

I generally want to keep it stock like on the intake side, exhaust could do with some headers

could posibly look at wacking tvis on it and a bigport intake and turbing it. want to run a max of 14psi. is a crusty old bigport with freshen up capable of reliably pulling this off? and what are fairly well suited turbos for this application

No idea on turbo, but if you keep it stock s/c some higher comp pistons from an N/A version works well. Or maybe a TRD stel head gasket to up the compression, you will have to check how much that will alter it though.

Water to air intercooler is a huge gain

why would you put TVIS on it if you turboed it??

either the nissan T28 or the Ht18s-t3 combo are the pooular easy to get cheap turbos.

iv got a Ht18 T3 on mine all up it cost about $500 i think, but iv seen them for sale for $150

because its been proven to be very effective on even a turbo even maybe make it open when the turbos at boost

ive heard of nissan turbos shitting out really easy hence i want reliablity

If you keep the SC and stock ecu, id try keep the compression similar to stock. Add on a bigger pulley to run 14psi, better intercooler, using the n/a intake manifold would be an improvement as the stock one flows pretty bad i've heard. Ex manifolds - if you can fit fwd 4age 20v ones in that would work.

Turbo with stock ecu - I did this years ago and 10psi was the max until it ran too lean, this was using a T28 turbo. I just added in an extra injector with a link injector controller and switched that on at 10psi. That unit has a duty cycle gain control as well so was pretty easy to setup on the dyno.

Got me over 200kw atw on 20psi.

My AW11 had a bigport redtop longblock (so 9.4:1) running stock AW11 4agze ecu etc. ran fine, much faster than a stock one. Helped by C52 gearbox. Was running an indicated 8-9psi.
