Water temp flucuations - not theremo stat

Postby gleem » Mon May 03, 2010 7:52 am

4age blacktop. takes car 5 mins of triving to get just above the c line (cold). if i stop and let idle it goes up to just over a 3rd. then 1 minute of driving again to drops all the way. I have changed the thermostat but didnt do any thing, old one workes fine but the rubber seal was a bit worn and wouldnt completly seal when closed. Ive also changed the water temp sensor. But by feeling the hoses once warm they were only work so its not a temp sensor.

Any other comments?

I used a cheap thermostat in my MR2 and had the same issues with it being slow to heat up and cooling down at higher speeds, so I got a TGP one and all was fixed.

Pull the thermostat out and check/test it? If your car was warming up fine and holding temperature and now it doesn't.......and the only change you've made is the thermostat + sensor - seems like a likely place to start looking?

My Evo used to do that, would get to full temp when idling for awhile but drop when travelling at a 100km consistantly.

Only when it was coolish weather, when really hot it would stay at full temp. Never figured it out, but was really annoying as the idle would always be high because it thought the engine was cold...

Ahhhh, bought a lemon.

If the last owner had any clues they would have dropped a bottle of additive into the cooling system, that should hide most of the symptoms for the next 3 months or so.
I'd suspect that the gauge is reading wrong too. Try earthing the wire that pulls off the sensor, make sure the gauge creeps up to the red when you turn on the key.

would test the temp guage as that could be playing with your head a bit. other than that you could check waterpump/alternator belt isn't slipping and causing the water pump to work intermidently. but that would be quite unlikely.
