Light dip direction

Postby Mr Revhead » Mon Aug 23, 2010 3:20 pm

Who can point me in the direction of some good accurate information about what determines the dip direction in a headlamp.
Specifically older style rectangle inserts using R2 and/or H4 bulbs.

Is it the tilt of the bulb? Ie tilted right for r/h dip and left for l/h dip.

And no, It's not the lens.

Left hand imports we work on have the lenses switched for RH units,

The american h/l system is different from the european system.
Which I just learned today!
In the USA its lenses, in Europe, its mostly bulb position (talking older things here, not new xenons and leds etc) Apparanly quite a few older euro cars and two position bulb holders for an easy switch.

In this case the vehicle is a Volvo, and its dipping right and I'm trying to find the parts so it will dip left.
the lens pattern is symetrical and identical to the Rodeos we have here.
the only difference between the two is the tilt direction of the bulbs.
So far it seems r/h tilt for l/h dip.

I'm just trying to find some technical info online for me to send to head office to get across what I am talking about.

It's filament position in relation to the reflector, some Eurpoen lights will have a bulb holder that allows the bulb position to be rotated 30° to be used for left or right hand drive. If the light doesn't have this facility then you have to replace the unit.

Yeah thats what i have found out this arvo, just trying to find something online that is clear and easy to understand so I can get it across to people who have no concept of how these things work....

They keep coming back to me saying:
"Can you put the lights in upside down?" etc

sorry constantly dealing with yank crap :)
just remembered i had a bmw a few weeks back with tags that slid from left to right and tilted the bulbs, changing the angle.

LOL
Just swap the headlights left for right!
"that will work fine... yeah right"
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
