No clutch pedal pressure

Postby eskimo » Mon Sep 13, 2010 6:51 pm

Hey,

Went to the mountain in the weekend and half way up the road to Turoa I lost all pressure in my clutch, depressed the pedal & there was nothing. I gave the pedal a few more pumps and then managed to get it out of gear, pulled over popped the bonnet to check if I had lost all fluid but it was full.

Tried it again after about 10mins of standing & staring at it and I had a full pedal with loads of pressure. I carried on up the mountain & it did it again 10mins later, pulled over left it for a few mins then the pressure came back.

After leaving Turoa as the weather was poo the pedal was fine all the way back down and during the drive Whakapapa then towards the top of Whakapapa it happens again.

Managed to get to the top left it for a few hours cam back & the car was fine the on drive back to Auckland. Any one know what could cause this... as im baffled

Sounds like a bung (or on it's way out) piston seal in the master cylinder causing fluid to bypass the piston

I think...

Air bubble in the clutch line, bleed it and it will be ok in the future.

At sea level the bubble is small and gets compressed when you have pushed the pedal a small way.
Up the mountain the pressure is lower and the bubble gets bigger and doesn't get compressed enough to let the fluid push the clutch slave!

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

^^ yep, needs a bleed.

I ended up with zero clutch pedal in the evo on the way back from taupo, after sitting overnight it had about 1/2 a pedal and it came back to normal after a bleed.

Mine had some milky crappy looking fluid in it so i gave it a dam good flush through.

Put it this way, if there was a massive leak in the slave cylinder, line or master cylinder seals were completely gone the pedal would not come back up. It would stay down on the floor. It sound like you have an air bubble there.

Give it a bleed and see how you go. I had a similar problem in my old Starlet. Would have a good pedal if it hadn't been used for a while but after a few gear changes it would lose pressure and turn to shit. Turned out to be the master cylinder.

had a similar problem in my ute on the way to Auckland once, wen i used the peddle alot (changing gear going through towns and intersections) it got softer until it did nothing, leave it for a bit and would come back, was the seal's in the slave cylinder, fluid would bypass piston and when left for a while it would go back. after forgetting about it wen i cam to drive home i left my foot on the clutch for a while and all the fluid drained out of the boot... was a fun drive home with no clutch

slave cylinder was only a yer old too :x
