Postby byza213 » Wed Oct 20, 2010 9:13 am

I drive the corolla daily think model is ee80 sedan 1985

recently something strange has started happening when i change gear (fine) and put some gas on the pedal she spluters and the car kinda shutters until she gets up to speed not having the smooth change i used to have.
Not like she has much but can feel somethings not right, it doesnt idol the same either on take off I can definitly feel it

any ideas what this maybe ?

it sounds like dirty plugs or perhaps a fuel supply issue

First you start with filters. Check air and fuel filter. Fuel filter is cheap enough just to replace it as prophylactic measure.
Then check the plugs, leads, distributor cap and coil.

What kind of stutter? If it is goes ba-ba-ba (missing), then goes fine after certain RPM it is ignition related. If the stutter is more random then it is fuel related.

Take off the air filter and have a look down the carb (but don't whack the throttle while you are looking into it on running engine - you might lose your eye brows). If there is a lot of gunk - you can try and clean it with carb cleaner spray.

thanks mate

yea they shutter is not really random it does it alot now after changing gear when i apply gas

may relate to an ignition issue because it has its moments of starting also.

but that could relate to a fuel problem also right?

will probably be fuel related. had the same thing on an old car we had. have you been running it real empty lately by any chance?

can get it picking up all the crap in the bottom of the tank and blocking fuel filter/carb up. just hope that the fuel filter picked it up first!

Yea it may not be the issue but a carb clean/overhaul will do wonders. Should be able to get a kit for under $100 and its pretty easy to do.

That and as said new fuel filter, and give the spark system a check/birthday if you havn't for awhile

does the EE80 use one of those horrible SU-like carb setups? They tend to cause issues and people fit the EE90 normal downdraft carb setup in place. Or is it the other way around?

I think Sergei is talking of trying to draw whatever shyte is in the jets into the bowl. You can simply do this by removing the filter and any plumbing prior to the carb, running the engine and blocking off the inlet with your hand. The added vacuum will often clear the jets.
Just be prepared to either leak some vacuum through your fingers or release your hand quickly.

From the sounds of things I'd say Sergei is correct. You need to clear your jets.
The answer is Helmholtz!

What's the compression? What do the plugs look like? Points?
*******
Yes, choking the carb may unclog a jet, but only in theory in my experience.
Carb engines put plugs through a lot of fuel variations and their usually lousy & over used choke can carbon things up pretty well. Running it hard, 2nd & 3rd redline, may help it clean off the plugs & seats & rings, no disrespect to Italians.

Would be electronic ignition you would hope!

A carb clean and rebuild is so easy on these carbs! just have a go haha. Just pull it apart in a roasting tray so you don't loose any bits

The early 2E carbs are a PITA. When they wear out, they'll do as was described, starting alright when cold but often taking 3-4 attempts when warm.

+1 for overhaul of carb, they're very simple.

once you pull it apart you will will see its nothing to stress over

biggest piece of advice is use the correct size screw drivers or you will $&#$% your jets/ brass screws
