Exedy clutch problems

Postby Adamal » Sat Nov 27, 2010 11:08 pm

This is more of a questionare, but I'm wanting to know if anyone else has had problems with their clutches.

Reason being, I installed one in my Silvia the other day, and straight out of the garage, it was slipping. I took it to a mechanic, who suggested there may be some grease or something on the flywheel (hydraulics, slave cylinder etc have been checked, he confirmed its internal).
He takes it off and says "Looks fine to me. Maybe a little bit of grease, but nothing that should make it slip"
So take it back to Exedy, they say nothing wrong with it, clean it up, and send me on my way. Mechanic installs it, and same thing.

Then having a chat with Akane, and he said "No clamp pressure? Same thing happened to me with an Exedy".

The mechanic also said that he no longer deals with Exedy as he's had problems before.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

I've heard of them slipping a bit while they bed in, which is odd, but could be happening here? How badly does it slip? Under full load, or are we talking mild throttle.

Yea, like mild throttle. In an N/A.

Having had a clutch changed in the MR2 before, it NEVER felt like this when it was bedding in, and the mechanic said theres no way it should be like this.

No, I've only ever heard it commented about Exedy clutches. Definitely shouldnt be slipping already.
Did you install the clutch or the mechanic?

I installed it first time around. Mechanic took it out, said it looked fine, Exedy claimed it was dirty and cleaned it. Took it back to the mechanic and he reinstalled it, and it was exactly the same.

Stupid question following... Can you put a clutch in backwards?

You can put the clutch plate in backwards yes, but I would imagine twice in a row would be pretty rare.

usually there isn't enough "dish" in the flywheel face to allow the more protrudey side of the clutch disk (which is supposed to face toward the pressure plate) to fit, so you can't install them backwards.

Did you machine the flywheel? If so was the step (if there is one) between the friction surface and the face where the PP attaches maintained at the correct depth?

Flywheel was machined, yes. And as Malcolm said, the clutch plate has one side that protrudes on one side more than the other, so it won't go in the wrong way.

And no, no steps between the surface and the PP contact area.

Have this happened to my Wagon R, my mechanic took the gearbox off total of 5 times ontop of the 1 time when I changed the clutch myself, we machined the step 3 times to 3 different depths, there's just like, not enough clamp. We got the pressure plate tested and the clamp seemed fine.

It would slip when the turbo boost kicks in, giving it's thunderous ground shattering 100ps. This would be okay for the first 5000kms, only after then it'll slip. took the gearbox off, plenty of meat left on the friction disc.

Imma stay away from exedy clutches from now.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Measurement of the disk & clutch to see the disk thickness and the distance from the flywheel to the pressure plate? Thanks.

I've got exedy clutch in my BZR, however bcoz im a new manual driver who don't really understand too much about cars, I have no idea wat it means to have the clutch "slipping".

Can some1 explain this to me please? like wat you gonna feel when it does. Thanks!!!

basicaly you put your foot down to accelerate and the revs go up but the cars doesnt speed up, normally itll only slip up to a certain rpm and then drop back down to normal when it grips

and also if it slips alot you will smell a really distinct horrible smell of hot metal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijhrDgxRweM

notice in this vid the revs go right up to 6000rpm but the car still only sits at 60mph, then when it gets to arouns 70mph the revs drop right bak down to 3000rpm all of a sudden, which is because the clutch suddenly grips

im sure someone can probly give you a better example than me though
The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."

Here's an image

Image

#1 Is the flywheel. That bolts up to the engine crankshaft. Its a bit hunk of metal that holds rotational momentum and makes it easy for take offs etc.

It bolts up to the pressure plate, which is #8, and between them is the clutch plate, #9.

The outside part of #9 is the clutch lining. Thats the bit that has the diagonal lines on it. The pressure plate has a surface that makes contact with the clutch lining and clamps it against the flywheel.
The center of the clutch plate is connected to the input shaft of the gearbox, and thats how the power from the engine gets in.

When you push your foot on the clutch, a fork pushes the release bearing (#7) on to those forks you can see in the center of the pressure plate (Thats #8 remember) which it turn pulls off the surface that makes contact with the clutch plate lining.

This means the flywheel and pressure plate (which are bolted to the engine) are no longer in contact with the clutch plate (which is connected to the gearbox), so its disengaged, and you can change gears.

I had a problem with exedy., they told me that my pressure plate was rated to 1900 pounds. It wasn't i had it tested at 1060. thats why it slipped. They didnt want to know about it and told me it was my fault.
