CE92 Shocks into AE92 - Anybody done this?

Postby PHLEX » Thu Dec 16, 2010 9:27 pm

Just been looking at random bits on trademe and stumbled across an auction for some RWD Corolla shortened shocks and they had used CE92 Shocks instead of AE92 due to the heavier valving.

This got me thinking, could I put CE92 Shocks into my AE91 corolla to stiffen it up a bit?

Had a bit of a google and couldnt find anything about this, sounds logical to me as some of those CE92 wagons are load rated.

I've found the fronts have a different KYB part number to the AE92 ones but the rears are the same (not worried about the rear for now).

Wondering if anybody has done this and can let me know if its worth doing? I am up for 4 new shocks early next year anyway so figure if I can stiffen up the front a bit while i'm at it then why not!

Hey, I have installed ST18* front inserts into AE82 GT strut bodies. Basically the same dimension inserts. Just needed to put in a couple of large washers into the bottom of the strut body as the ST insert are slightly shorter (like only a few mm 3,5?? Can't remember). Don't want your shock loose in the body!

Checked with the guys at Stocks and he checked the technical dimensions and they all matched bar the slightly different height. Also used the original strut shock "nuts" (the big 8 sided ones) as the Celica ones supplied were a bit different.
If you did the same checks I'm sure an AE92 would take the same Celica inserts. Nice slight damping increase over std.

Could even go into Stocks or somewhere else and check this kind of thing at the counter with a strut body to be sure. Not sure about rear shocks though.

Cheers, Al

the only thing that may be different is the bolt spacing where the strut meets the hub , in ae82 fxgts run a bigger bolt and nut compared to the 1300 version, also the spacing is different between ae82 and ae92 so you would have to check this . 8)

Yes, just get the Celica inserts - not the full struts. No idea if the lower bolt up or anything else is common with Celicas.

Definitely right about the bolt differences too - watch that one. AE82 1.6 GL's also use the small bolts compared to the GT's. Looks like AE92 GT front struts bolt on to AE82 GT hubs ok - except you need to vertically slot the top hole a bit for the AE82 GT camber adjuster to work.......
