Non Toyota - Mitsi question

Postby celica_xr9145 » Tue Jan 04, 2011 9:46 pm

Not a toyota question but hoping someone on here maybe able to help.

My dad has a 1997 Mitsubishi Pajero (3.5L petrol GDI Automatic) with a broken starter motor. He's having a real tough job finding a 2nd hand one for it.

Does anyone know if one from a non GDI petrol Pajero will fit? Or even off another model/engine/car?

Want it fixed ASAP as im stuck taking him to work in my Silvia :?

Thanks,
Jamie

All the 4wd + jap wreckers around town. They all have starter motors but as soon as you say 3.5 petrol GDI they say no. :?

Thought rebuilding it could be pricey but might have thought wrong, will ask around tomorrow.

Thanks

it'll prob cost more than a second hand one, but will be more bulletproof

unless hes tight for cash its the way to go IMHO

All? Someone in town should be able to source you one easy enough. As Matt says, chuck up some numbers or more vehicle details etc.

Whats broken on it?

Yea not one ay, loads for other pajero's but none for a petrol 3.5 GDI, no one was sure if any others would fit.

Not sure whats broken to be exact, the only way to make it start is to tap the starter motor with a hammer although even that has stopped working now. Doesnt make any noises either.

Will get under and find a part number tomorrow.

Thanks again

Tapping it with a hammer means the brushes are worn out,
not a big deal to fix normally,

but that's not usually a good idea,
as you keep tapping it till it is like it is now,
even taping it wont work which usually means you have either broken the permanent magnets from hitting it, ot stuffed the armature by running the brushes way past the point where they stop.

Either way it probably just went from new brushes to a new starter.

Have you got the starter off? Bring it in to me and I'll pull it to bits if you just want brushes done on it

Spent the afternoon trying to get it out. Almost there, not much room so cant see a part number yet.

If we cant find a starter for it, will bring it in to you Lloyd. Found one from a 3.5 petrol MPI which from what i found is the same as a GDI but going to make sure first.
