unbalanced rear brakes

Postby jaypines » Thu Jan 06, 2011 7:13 pm

ive read the threads about brake proportioning valves but i think my car has got none of it. looking on the EPC it only got a one-way valve.
now does a car that have ABS have rear brake proportioning valve as well?
parking brakes read equal on the rollers but they failed me on being my rear brakes unbalanced.
will do a full system flush/bleed and clean/sand the rotors and pads on the weekend... any other tips on how to fix this unbalance? TIA.

what car is it?

YES ABS cars still have it.

Look for a block on the firewall that has 4 or more brake pipes through it.

car is a 2000 corolla AE112 with rear disc.
from the EPC here http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_G_200003 ... 708.5.html the block on the firewall is called "No.1 way for rear brake tube" (90412-10140).
was going to buy a new brake proportioning valve to solve this but was confused to what the EPC says. just want to make sure.
if i indeed have no proportioning valve, do these cars have EBD now?

From they way I see it the part you have quoted is the proportioning valve,
just called by another name.

Do yourself a favour and forget that. I did that a couple times  It even passed once, but you'll just be replacing the part next time if you manage to get through this time. Buying a new one ($$$??) or cleaning yours out should fix it.

When I last took my car back for a recheck (and passed after cleaning out the valve) there was a Caldina there on its like 8th recheck for the same problem.

Looks like its labelled as number 8 on that page too

yeah its labelled as number 8 on the EPC... what gets me confused is that its got like a note *1 which says for rear drums, use this part number (47150-12230) which is actually the proportioning valve assy. I got the rear disc that suggest this part number (90412-10140) and is named differently. So it got me thinking i may not have a proportioning valve after all.
Had a look with the part on the car and looks like theres no way disassemble to clean it... :? its just the 4 brakeline bungs and no service holes whatever...

Read the other threads that have been posted in recently about rear brake balance being out. Someone posted up a guide on how to clean it out.

Someone wrote up instructions on how to clean them. I did it last month, not something i'd do again soon :x But it is doable. All depends how keen you are to do it yourself or get a brake specialist to do it. It can be done. After a clean my brakes came up perfectly balanced 8)

Not a fun job, more of a nightmare so just depends how confident working on your car as to if you should attempt it or not.

Where are you located? Add it to your profile as there might be someone local that can be recommended to do the job.

I removed mine and took it to a brake shop to be rebuilt/cleaned out. It wasn't something i wanted to stuff with myself and have it fail

Pretty sure it was like $90 to get sorted VS around $400 for a new one.
