SOLVED - Suspension Rattle

Postby DUGDUG » Sat Jan 15, 2011 9:01 pm

I've got a real annoying rattling clanging noise coming from the right rear suspension when I go over even moderate bumps. I can only hear it when the right rear goes over bumps. Speed bumps are usually ok if I go over slow enough.

It's an AE101 BZ touring lowered on Super Low springs.

At first I thought it was sway bar links and bushes which I changed but didn't make much difference. I've been through two pairs of second hand shocks, the ones in there now are Munroe Gas GTs. I'm not sure if they've been shortened to accommodate the super low springs, could that be the cause of the rattle?

I wouldn't think so and the springs are captive so don't think I really need to get the shocks shortened.

Second hand shocks, unless you know their history, are probably a waste of time.

Could be all sorts of things, grab everything and shake it to see if anything is loose. Repeat with the wheel off the ground.

Superlows in a carib i'm going to take a stab and stuffed shocks bottoming out / doing something else equally bad.

Not something simple like the jack is rattling round in the quarter panel (dunno where they are on 101s).

make sure you have a yank on the rear swaybar/ linkages/ mounts.. replacing these in the trueno made quite a difference..

Semi solved.

The right rear brake didn't have any isolation slippers so the brake pads just sat there rattling away. I ended up taking one off the left side and putting it on the right, now there's only a faint rattling noise from both sides which I'll take as a successful diagnosis.

I'll have to go to Pick-a-Part or a wrecker tomorrow - unless someone on here has a couple to spare? :-)
