RX7 (FD) electrical problems

Postby RS13 » Thu Apr 28, 2011 7:59 pm

Hopefully someone here might have an idea.. largely standard FD3S, the alternator is getting very hot very quickly (with nothing obvious that could cause a massive load on it), and the car will miss under load then cut out. Has been to an auto sparky, but they couldn't find anything wrong that could cause the problem!

I haven't had a look at it myself yet, but any ideas?

Start by checking voltage at the alternator and at the battery.

Alternator bench checked fine, battery has been moved to the boot. All engine earths have been checked and redone.

were u present when the car was checked over, if so what did they do exactly.
sounds like it would be pretty straight forward to diagnose if the problem was present.

hot alternator has to be working its ass off so either going full output or shorting somehow.....
whats the battery condition like?
PM me for anything autoelectrical, Info or jobs etc....

If the alternator gets quite hot to the touch
and the heat is not transferred to the alternator from the engine,
i.e. the alt is hotter than the engine after it has only run for a short bit,
then the Alt is faulty. Sometimes it is hard to tell on a test bench as you need to listen for the electrical noise at the right speed to hear the phase out,
or you actually need to dismantle and test eacdh component properly.

My bet would be a crook alternator.
