Max journal ovality?

Postby Dell'Orto » Wed May 04, 2011 10:44 pm

Finally gotten around to measuring the main bearing journals after fitting ARP main studs to my gen 2 3SGTE...with an internal micrometer I come up with about .18mm out of round. Is this acceptable or do I need to get it align bored now?

You don't usually measure the journals for OOR because they don't wear, it's the bearing shells that wear.

The cranks is what should be measured for OOR and the limit is ~ 0.02mm

Did you torque it up to toyota spec values or the ARP spec which is much more?

.18 seems huge to me, i assume you mean bearing housing rather than journal.

i would think you'd want it around 0.02-0.04mm

ARP as per instructions. It does say in the instructions to check for ovality afterwards.
fivebob - ARP say to check the journals after torquing them up, as the studs pull them in much tighter.
And yes, .18 is huge according to an engine reconditioner today, will have to get it honed. Or flag studs and go back to bolts.

Decisions decisions.....

Torque it up to the stock specs.

I think ARP studs say something like 60ft lbs.

I usually do them up to 45-50ft lbs to keep the journal bore round.
Never had an issue doing this.

So, flagged the studs, went back to the bolts...however, upon quadruple checking, number 2 is out of spec, by a reasonable margin. Is it safe to use a single .25 u/s bearing, or do I need to get the rest ground to match?
