Tyre profiles too low?

Postby Akane » Thu May 05, 2011 7:35 pm

So, I went to do some skidz at pukekohe last month, started the drift a bit too early and clipped the apex on the hairpin, went over the bumpy stuff, into the ditch and went back on to the bumpy stuff, now my front right wheel is not really round anymore .....

The question is, is it because my tyre profile is too thin? I'm running 215/35/R18 on the front, that wheel drop into the ditch and back onto the track must've hurt it. Or are my rims too weak? They're 5Zigen Pro N1's, I know they ain't work wheels but then they ain't exactly TSW's or Drift R's neither.

If I go 40 profile on my next tyre purchase, will it make my problems go away. Accidents like this does happen and I need to find a way to minimize damages like this. Cheers.

5Zigen's aren't any better than TSW/Advanti etc but yeah 35 profile 215's don't really leave a lot of tyre to absorb shock.

If you go to a 40 profile you'll be less likely to bend/smash them on ripple strips/bumps but the only cure for the problem is good quality wheels.

I actually went off the ripple, into the ditch where grass was but the rain has washed everything away, and back onto the ripple stuff, at about 45kph I guess? Wasn't watching the speedo, too busy keeping the car sideways.

I think I'll go 40 profile on my next tyre purchase, although I really love the 35 profile look. Not a fix fix but it should soften the blow for now.

btw, you'll have to beat me senseless with a stick before I'll buy a TSW wheel, I believe 5zigen wheels are not forged, they used to be distributed by the YHI group when they make the pro n1's, and they were involved with distributing TSW's, I *think* that's where people get them mixed up, maybe tsoob can clear that up for us? Or am I thinking advanti......

I know there was a debate about who actually makes them etc. IIRC they were made by YHI in Taiwan who also makes Advanti/Other junk wheels. I was more basing my comment on having cracked a Pro N1 (they're the ones with Black Racing written on them?) on a mate's WRX on the dirt road coming out of Meremere - I'm still a bit sour about it because I had to buy him a pair

Well I know they're pretty weak wheels, when I took out a curb before on factory MR2 15" my suspension got all queer on me and the rim is slightly bent and dented but still OK, did the same on the pro n1 and a whole chunk fell off and the suspension was still fine.

even a top end forged wheels tend to come off second best after attacking ripple strips if you have reasonably low profile tyres..

a second set of race rubber on some factory wheels would be my suggestion if you plan on getting out on the track every now and then.

I only go to the track on rainy seasons. My stock rims are only 15"... gotta be bling bling when you hit the tracks!

A good example is Targa cars always running a large sidewall tyre. We had a DB9 as a promo car run all the stages on factory huge magnesium wheels with super low profile tyres..... guess what happened to a rim on the second day!!

This will be the second fked rim, I wonder how many times I can repair this set of rims before they turn into marshmellows!

hopefully 40 profile will lessen the damage, these sport maxx is on their way out anyway, has put on about 10,000km on them so far, traction AAA+++ will trade again :)
