Cert for Front Mount Intercooler?

Postby Sideros » Fri May 06, 2011 9:18 pm

Can people with WOF knowledge only reply here as I need a definative answer to take to VTNZ!

I have an ST205 celica that has failed it's warrant due to having a front mount intercooler installed.

The only part of the body I have altered is drilling a hole for the piping to go through. This hole is in a plate just to the left (if looking at vehicle from front) of the radiator. It is not a structural part of the car.

Do I have to have a cert or are they just being di*ks about it?

What EXACTLY can I say or ask them to do to "prove" they should have failed it if they should have passed it?

Thanks!

take it to an LVV certifier, and he will write a note to say you don't need a cert if that is the case.

Can I just say " WHAT the hell were you thinking going to VTNZ??".
I vowed never to return after they said I needed a cert for my rear swaybar , so I pointed at the cert plate that said "adjustable suspension" and they said it didn't cover my adjustable swaybar ??

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

I know there is some gay rule saying you aren't allowed to modify you existing bumper (chop a big hole in it) to fit a front mount, but you are allowed to have an aftermarket front bumper and fit a front mount (wtf).

So, front mount = you're encouraged to have body kit too?

But from what you say, you haven't touched your bumper...

I've taken my car a few times because it's convenient. No need to leave your car at a garage all day.

This. It's quick. They have never failed me on anything before. They didn't even look twice at my battery in the boot that's not in a battery box (they don't have to be, but this is what I was expecting them to fail it on)

they probably thought you have hacked up the bumper reinforcer to fit the i/c which you cant do.

Which VTNZ was it? The one on Rangitikei St next to smith city has a few guys that have a clue as they see modified cars all the time. If you're unhappy ask to see Brent and ask him why your car needs a cert for a FMIC - he's a good guy and will let you know their reasoning/put it through.

Rules are here: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/virm-in-service-certification/virm-in-service-certification.html

Part 3 (Vehicle structure) relates to you. Ask them specifically what section or rule your car does not comply with.

Part 3 Page 5:
Fitting of or modification to: An aftermarket intercooler
LVV certification is not required provided that:
•the front structure of the vehicle has not been modified, and
•the intercooler is a suitable fitment for the vehicle, and
•the front bumper assembly is unaltered.

-> Print that off and educate them.

That says front structure is not modified, yet he has already he said he drilled holes for the pipes which IS a modification. So unless those are bolt in panels then the WoF guy is most likely right.
Got pics of where you have cut?

If I understand correctly you have drilled a hole though the block off panel between the radiator and the chassis rail , so no way structural . Maybe you need to remake this panel out of something like plastic sheet so it is clearly not factory

If the panel is welded to the chassis it is considered structural as has been pointed out.

Yup unless the hole is there from factory, you've modified the structure of the chassis and technically need to have a cert for it. Really depends on how picky the inspector is at the time. There are a lot of things that need to be certified that manage to get through (eg fitment of wastegates, chipped/aftermarket ECU's, non stock turbos etc). Some inspectors either don't know about the rule or aren't picky enough to care.
