Biggest brakes that fit inside 13" rims?

Postby Crown » Wed May 11, 2011 8:53 am

Looking for caliper/rotor upgrade for an aw11, but its got to stay on 13" rims. They don't need to be toyota as I can adapt them to fit but ideally twin pot.

Anyone got any suggestions? Everything I've looked at so far seems to need at least 14" rims.

Biggest you can get into a 15" rim nicely is 280mm.

So 13" rim would mean 255mm.

Dont think anyone makes something this small for OEM cars?
If you were to use the twin pots from a Corolla/curren/celica the mounting tabs will be too long.

Why do you want to stay on 13's? the car would handle better on 15's

13" is about the biggest rim you'll fit under an Imp (without looking fecking rude), and have heard the AW11 hubs and suspension being used on them????

Got info on that? Coz I'd love to run mac struts and discs!
Plenty out there running bigger wheels than that. None very standard

Metro turbo four pots? I don't know what size wheel you'd need, but mini guys go for them so ought to be reasonably small?

Its a track car, running the TRS michelin slicks so need to stay 13".
Ive seen a kp60 with I think twin pot honda brakes on the front with 13" rims before, but I cant remember what model they were off.
Palmside do 4pots for 13" rims but they are over 1k, so no go.
The aw11 is pretty light in front as its got a fibreglass body shell so i dont need anything to extreme just something a bit bigger than the standard ones.

My first thoughts are to go with thickest disk to max out the thermal mass available - this will help reduce disk temp at the end of a big stop.
Twin or 4 pot calipers... will distribute the clamping force on the pads better but won't necessarily give better braking.
Are you looking for lower pedal force?
Or better pedal feel?
Or better resistance to brake fade?

Keep in mind the factory brake bias - work out the piston area for front and rear calipers. If you change the front calipers try to keep the front rear piston area ratio the same to keep the bias the same.
If you increase front piston area increase the rear piston area also.

My Thoughts on 13" rims...
TRS slicks might not be a good enough reason to stick with 13" rims...
I guess the tyre is a pretty high profile - wings and slicks tend to run small rims with big profile e.g. F1
An AW11 stripped right down might get to 900ish KG by the time you put a cage into it and a bit of fuel...
TRS cars are 550kg? (guessing)

Think seriously about 15" rims - wide range of tyres available and real easy to fit bigger brakes...

Ken
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Best OEM calliper I can think of for a 13" wheel would be Austin Princess 4 pots, good luck finding them but pretty common for classic racers to fit under 13" wheels. Have also run various AP calliper & the Wilwood Dynalites we run on the midget fit inside a 13" wheel as well but then again it does depend on the 13" wheel as your spun speedway wheels or simmons/arrow type 3 piece wheels generally have a bit more clearance.

Else go carbon/carbon F1 style after all they only run a 13" wheel & they stop ok. I know of a couple of cars that do sub minute laps around Pukekohe running 13" wheels & brakes & they have no drama stopping but then they weigh under 1000kg easy.
