The small box next to the coil pack, can someone please tell me if this is a condenser, if so is it necessary to run the engine? I have something else similar but not the exact thing.[/img]

It is a condenser, and any ignition/points one will do.

in an electronic ignition system it helps suppress emi that could interfere with the ecu, on an engine with points it reduces arcing across the points gap.
without one on a points system the contacts would be erroded very quickly.

The engine will run without one,
as in if you unplug it the car will still drive normal.
But is generally accepted that they are required for long term use.

Yes, that should work. The condenser is mainly there to suppress electrical "noise". You have the earlier version of the same thing
in your hand.
