Hot air from radiator overflow pipe

Hi All,

Just after some advice. About a year ago I noticed my 98 Caldina GTT was making bubbling sound when the car switches off. Found it was blowing hot air out of the radiator overflow pipe into the overflow tank causing the bubbling. This whole time the temperature gauge doesn’t go above normal.

Took it to a garage and they replaced the thermostat and radiator cap (the bits inside came apart) and checked the in and out pipe to the radiator to be ok. Didn't charge me anything and said to keep an eye on it and take it back if it continues.

So a year later (that's how slack I am) I haven't took it back and it still happens occasionally . I guess most of the time I don't notice it because I have a 1 minute turbo timer on the alarm and so by that time I've already walked away.

It doesn't lose any water or oil. Temperature is normal all the time.

If anyone have any ideas let me know... I'm prepared for it to be a huge repair

I had a ST165 and it would do this on shut down. I was under the assumption that the water around the turbo was boiling.

On my 1JZ/2JZ's it didnt do this

It's normal for a 3S-GTE to boil water around the turbo, SW20s are the worst, but I've had my ST215 do it as well.

Nothing to worry about and nothing that needs to be fixed.

My st185 used to do that, got my radiator fixed (it was blocked) and hasn't done it since

There's only one of 2 things it can be.

One is steam but you cant bubble steam through water.
The other is exhaust gas.

Steam will condense if you put the pipe up against a cold surface
Exhaust gas won't.

Well actually......

When water is coming up to the boil and you see bubbles coming out of it, it's the oxygen (and CO2) which is dissolved in the water, as it gets hotter, it boils out of solution. Afterall, that's why there are fish.
Water turns to steam at atmoshperic pressure at exactly 100 deg C
If the water is less than 100deg C the steam (bubbling through it)condenses and reverts to being water.

Not quite, the small bubbles you see before water boils are mainly dissolved gases, but at boiling point it is steam that comes off from the heat source.

Ever heard of latent heat of vapourisation?

Steam won't revert to water if the water is unable to absorb the energy required to turn the gas back into a liquid. If the water is anywhere close to boiling point, then it does not have the capacity to revert the steam back to water. Even if it is below boiling point the steam may still bubble through the water because there isn't enough time for the water to absorb the energy required for the state transformation.

Anyway back on topic, it's steam being forced out the radiator because the local heat around the turbo water jacket causes the coolant to boil, thereby pressurising the cooling system to the point the the radiator cap releases the pressure into the overflow bottle...Pretty simple really, so simple the even MAGN1T should be able to understand it

their natural goodness far and wide. As they spread, their concentration
falls. However, when released in the confines of a shower, full benefit is
obtained as the aromatic product of your bowel, expands and drifts
upwards, on its mission to bring peace and happiness to all.....
