GL3 / GL4 / GL5 Gearbox Oil

Postby BZG Wagon » Tue Sep 20, 2011 12:51 am

ST215 Caldina GTT. Manual Gearbox & Front Diff Oil - does anybody, definitively know what should go in there?

GL5: Recommended by Sergei as it's a Hypoid gearbox. I found a website translated from Russian saying Toyota recommended GL5. But the Russian version of the same website said GL3.

GL4: Castrol recommend either GL4 or GL5 for a Celica GT4 gearbox, and I presume it's a similar box to GTT's?

GL3: My local Toyota dealership said they have been selling TRD brand GL3 oil to GTT owners, and confirmed it with one of the parts guys from another branch who is adamant it's GL3. However they had nothing on record to confirm if that's the original fluid put in there by Toyota...

This is so frustrating.

Use the best available without falling for advertising BS or thinking that repackaged stuff from TRD/KAZZ/whatever is any better/different then a name brand.
GL4 replaces GL3 & GL5 replaces GL4, it's just progressions in the minimum quality & standards for Hypoid & gear oil in the last 30 years. Would you search out GL1/2 if your 40 year old FSM specified it?
Also, I wouldn't worry about the GL5 BS about 'yellow metal'!

What viscosity are you looking for? Pop down to your local BNT & get some Red Line fully synthetic oil. They're bound to have something to suit your application. They do GL4 75w90, 75w85 & 70w80 although they're not recommend to use with hypoid gears. The 75W90 NS GL5 is.
