Reduction in Altezza fuel economy

Postby skoty » Tue Nov 08, 2011 10:22 pm

So its been awhile since I last posted on here, been awhile since I had a Toyota. Anyway my RS200 Altezza had been averaging about 500kms per tank and then suddenly reduced to about 400kms per tank or less. Driving style hasn't changed, have only used 95+ octane fuel. Anyone have an idea of the problem? Perhaps the oxygen sensor is not working properly?

Cheers,

O2 sensor or possibly the MAF sensor.

Have done a few Altezza MAF sensors.

Give the MAF sensor a clean with contact clean and reset the ECU, also noticed mine would give crap fuel economy if the oil had turned to crap.

Worth checking the airfilter too.

I fitted a generic Repco o2 sensor to my gen3 3sge and gained about 2km per litre. It was throwing the right error code in diagnostics though, so was definitely dead.

Serviced it last week and cleaned air filter while I was at it. The poor fuel economy developed about 6 weeks ago. How do I go about resetting the ECU, is that just disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds or so?

Try the ECU fuse instead so you won't have to reprogramme your radio.
I don't think resetting the ECU will do anything.

You mention cleaning your filter. What kind of filter have you got and how did you clean it?

It's just a standard paper panel filter. Wasn't that dirty to begin with but just blew out the dust with compressed air.

Oh yep, I asked as Altezzas do not like aftermarket pods or oiled filters

Have you done the cambelt in that time?

I brought an ipsum for my wife to cart the kids around in and it was using to much gas, after a year of wasting money on gas, i pulled the top cover off and the cambelt was a tooth out. Once I put it back together got another 100k's out of a tank

When you say x amount of kms to a tank, you mean an actual tank full aye?

We have a lot of customers say "it goes through so much more gas these days" etc, but what they do is put 70 bucks in the tank for example, and then expect the same amount of kms out of that even though fuel has just gone up and they havnt put the same liters in, just dollars.
Hi Im Ben, Have a nice day :)

Haha yeah. A completely full tank run to empty.

How's it running? Idling higher? Any hesitation? Does it smell rich out the exhaust when it's warmed up?

Checked your tyre pressure lately? Does it roll easilly enough in neutral on the flat? Have your checked to see whether it's spitting out any codes?

Idling is normal, no hesitation and exhaust gas doesn't smell rich etc. Had new tyres fitted the other day so pressure should be fine. No check engine light on the dash coming on.

However checked the MAF sensor and there was quite a bit of oil in the intake and sensor so gave that a clean. Will see how that goes.
