4AGE crank oil seal area...

Postby lorolla24 » Sun Jan 15, 2012 5:55 pm

Hey,

Is the groove on my crank normal or is it wear from the oil pump seal?

That'd be wear from the front crank seal going hard, as most do over time and heta from engine oil etc. How deep is the groove and was it leaking oil bad?? There was a suggestion when one of my cars had same problem to put a speedy sleeve on it. Sometimes you can be lucky and very carefully mix some liquid metal spread it on the crank and carefully file/sand it down to the same level as the rest of the crank surface.

it is not a big problem (the groove), just insert the new seal slightly off (either further in when it was before, or slightly out) so the oil seal lip is not on the groove.

Yeah as long as the groove isn't too deep just do as above. Have done this also when the crank is still relatively good. Have just given you a morse case scenario

I've used slightly differant oil seals in the past (few mm differant on the sealing depth) works a treat.

Or this, i'm sure that's another option. the amount of times we get stuck at work with aftermarket oil seals being too loose is a PITA. So Genuine is a good idea

Just bought a whole new Genuine oil pump.
Hoping that this seal sits in a different place as the other one was out of a gasket set.

Will see how it goes.

you dont need to hope anything, just shift the seal a little in either direction so its not sitting on the lip. (like everyone else is saying :))

Installed new pump and bumped the seal out a mm or so.
Pump was old and it was due for replacement anyway.

Cheers for you fullas input.

Worst case scenario is using a speedy sleeve. If you need to just head down to a local engine machinist with the crank diameter were the seal runs, tap the sleeve over nicely and your done.

But usually what youv done will work, although putting it out towards the cambelt area will get it too close to the crank pulley. So long as its not hitting that and has enough of the seal in the housing to keep hold of it you should be fine.
Hi Im Ben, Have a nice day :)
