HPC Piston coatings

Postby 1I1 » Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:43 pm

Been recomended to get my pistons coated when the rebuild happens.

Wondering if anyone on here has had this done or has first hand experience with it?

Looking at: Thermal Barrier Coating (top of the piston) and Solid Dry Film (on the skirt)

Ive used it before. I built a 3T-GTE (some people might remember this being in my Supra back in the day).

It seemed ok untill I melted the pistons

That poor motor had a hard time, broke the oil pump drive at a toyspeed meet, rebuilt it then melted the pistons :(
Hi Im Ben, Have a nice day :)

I did the crown and skirts on my ST205 build a decade back. Has it had an effect? Who knows but 75000 kms later no issues.

Worth discussing piston clearances with HPC & your motor builder. From memory the piston clearances should be checked prior to coating the skirts. The skirt coating makes the pistons $&#$% tight in the bores from memory.
