Postby iamawesome » Sat Mar 10, 2012 9:40 pm

Looking at doing a vvt 1jz conversion in my ma70, but before I get underway, what advice do people have? Ie what things do I need to change to make it work n shit. All help appreciated :)

Bollocks - if you've got the engine then you just need some time, and a front cross-member IIRC.

Doesn't take much $ - if you're smart about it.

Actually use this site:

A lot of the info is the same or at least relevant.

Yeah thats true. There's sooo many people that are too scared to try this themselves. I got in there and did it. Would hate to think hiow much it would have cost if i didnt do it myself.

Only things i really paid for were engine, box, driveshaft.

Front crossmember if its a early *A70... "89.5+" not needed. Way to know is to look at the mounts. Circular is late model. Square is early model.

Don't use VVT single turbo 1JZ

Unless you plan to keep it stock/BPU, gets expensive to mod them. Nice meaty torque curve though.

You'll want JZA70 alloy mount brackets, your car should have the facelift cross member and the rubber insulators (not that there will be anything left of them, but I'm producing a kit for that in a few weeks).

You wanting to go manual or auto? Are you buying just an engine or a front cut or complete car?

Pretty much a piece of piss "lego" conversion, just knowing what you have, what you want and getting the right bits to put it all together. And having the coin to splash out for JZ/manual parts. The cost of that stuff still makes me cry :(

This might seem crazy but sell MA and buy JZA? Generally speaking if the factory built it in reasonable numbers then just buy the factory version.

Plus then you don't have to worry about trans issues, wiring, mounts, crossmemebers, cert, driveshaft loops etc etc etc

Mine is a widebody with a good body that's already had a manual conversion an adjustables etc done so hence the reason for the change rather than selling. Ahh I'll check the mounts it's an 89 an has the facelift lights so hopefully it is. I was planning on going for the vvt and keep it fairly stock for reliable power, is it any different for a 2j? Or are they more work?

The problem with 2jzgte is getting one for sensible money.
The GT4 is to Celicas what the GTR is to skylines.

The main hassles with the VVTI/2JZ conversion is the wiring, less diagrams/info for it. And some clearance problems on the 2JZ.

Is your manual conversion R154 or W box?

You'll basically need engine, loom, ecu, flywheel, clutch, bellhousing (these three to suit whichever box you're going to run), alloy mounts, intercooler piping, some wiring and plenty of time and knowledge.

Only for the US/LHD market has issues with that. I had no fitment issues relating to the 2JZ... V160 is a different story ;)

When doing the swap, go for the 98+ JZA80 mounts - the earlier ones arent in line but rather go off on a angle. They are heavier duty and dont pull apart like the 89+ *A70 mounts.

If you are keen, there is a little locating tab that needs removing. Easy as with a grinder/hacksaw/file.

Um I'm not too sure what box it is, the guy I got it off claimed it was an r154 but he was a muppet so who knows, who's on the shore that can tell me what it is? I can drive round to meet anyone.

I think 1j sounds easier, will start looking for soon after I sell my 7m

I have 1J starter, alternator and a 2JZ DM flywheel (all which can go on 2JZ). Sure i have a ignitor and other stuff floating around that i no longer need (1JZ/2JZ compatible also).

I also have a few 2JZGTE ECU's also.

Oh should add - might be some time before i can sort something out. Currently out of the country.
