1JZ\2JZ Coils

Postby MAC_HATER » Mon May 28, 2012 1:11 pm

ive been thinking about new coil's for the supra's 1JZ-GTE for a while now - the factory ones are getting cracks and are are completley stained from soaking in oil from various leaks and getting the odd bad running and misfiring symptoms that old coil's would point to - was considering replacing the lot when i got the 200,000km "FIX ALL THE THINGS" service 6 months ago - but i couldnt afford them on top of everything else so i left them be - today ive spotted a couple of sets on trademe

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 298078.htm

^^ second hand for 550-600 bucks with dubious claims of "25%" improvment of which they wont say

or these:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 346394.htm

pricier but new? and the seller is dunedin based so close enough as well - that said - the Yellow jacket Website lists them for $625 with free shipping NZ wide so going trademe would be silly :P

has anyone dealt with any coils like these? or use other coils that they are happy with? im tempted to flick and email to 1I1 as well just to see what i set of stock replacment coils would cost just to see what im in for as well

That first set, Ive dealt directly with the crowd in OZ. Got the clip pack, seemed a resonable bunch to deal with. Their price last time I looked was $500AUD +p&p. The jzs147 guys have been doing tests on coils and rebuilds

May need to be loged on to read it tho

There was a thread on Supraforums.com about those Superspark coils... The general consensus was that the Superspark ones would be much better than old and worn factory coils, but would not be as good as brand new factory coils..

See thread:

What ECU are you running, mate?

Depending on whether you can operate them or not, 1zz coils are a super powerful, cheap oem option.

Mr Ree - running stock ECU with a speedcut and fuelcut defender snuck in there somewhere from the previous owner - im just looking for a bolt in replacment set of coils thats going to do alright for when i get off my arse and start chasing more boost - if the 1ZZ Coils are compatible then ill definatly keep that option in mind aye

Snaps - that thread mentions a lot of "spark breakdown" at higher boost levels with the superspark coils - and that chucking in a set of low km OEM coils solved all their problems - i probably wont be chasing anywhere near as much boost or power as they were - but its got me thinking if i can get a set of second hand but low km Stock coils then id probably be fine - my running issues at the moment are once in a blue moon so its not being a real pain of a problem just yet - so i might be able to hold back and wait a bit and just keep an eye out for spares ect

Have you priced up new ones?
I guess you'll be surprised either way - extremely cheap or $&#$% expensive!

The second of the two, think about $1300 or something

try "suprastore" last.

Incorrect, there seems to be a member on the US forums (tayousei) that jumps to their defence every single time a thread pops up about suprastore. Im starting to suspect he is being paid by SS to try and change the negative opinions on a forum that could make them alot of money.

Sure there are good and bad experiences in every store, but some are ALOT worse than others.

3 e-mails, no responses. I would say at least poor service would be better than no service...
I'm not sold on that place at all.

haha wow - thats a big wave of negative views for suprastore US - might steer clear of them haha

1I1 has been in contact with me and let me know a sull set of replacment OEM coils is just a tickle bit more than the other 3rd party coils - so ill go with the new OEM ones through him :)

ive really got to get over this "omg genuine toyota parts are so expensive" thing - each time ive needed something ive instantly looked at aftermarket options without even considering going genuine toyota thinking "holy $&#$% they want me kidneys!" - sure most places do but Mark has come to the rescue each time with awesome deals :D

What will they cost if you dont mind sharing please?

Will you get a new coil harness/connections too? They get very perished/cracked over time so can contribute to ignition problems, even with new coils.

^^ what 1I1 said

i had the harness partially off when we did the front\top end seals all done - the plastic outer conduit? stuff is brittle as expected but they missed the oil leaks so the actual wiring appears to be in good nick - the connectors are also brittle from heat but the actual connections still look good and dont move so thats a good sign i guess as well

i wouldnt think you could get a new harness could you? maybe connector ends at best?

There was a place in USA that was selling the connector housings and terminals etc etc,
was going to get a set when I was rewiring the 2JZ Levin,
but ended up using old stuff again.

To be fair, a lot of stuff used to be like that and quite a bit of stuff still is. Always pays to price both ways. The coils used to be near on that price each rather than for a set. Though they did used to at least stock a set in the country too :P
