Headlight Question - perhaps for a sparky?

Postby .:O4AGTZ:. » Tue Jun 19, 2012 12:32 pm

Well its not a toyota but a 95 Pulsar hatch.

Recently one of the headlights has stopped working. And by that I mean the bulb isnt blown. If you open the hood and tap the back of the fitting you can get it to turn back on. When it is off the high beam light is on, and also the corresponding light on the back of the car does not work either!

The two must be connected in some way, but im assuming the issue is caused my the fitting on the back of the headlight? Anyone had this sort of issue before or can point me in the right direction?

Cheers

Have a look around for loose connections in that area. That is first step. The fact you can bump it and have it work again leads me to believe it's most likely that anyway.

Replace the bulb. Its $&#$%. Mine did the same thing a while back, replaced bulb. No problems afterwards.

To prove it, swap bulbs from one side of the car to the other.

Yea, swapping lamps is a good way of checking if they are faulty.

Also have a look at the terminals, they can sometimes get covered in verdigris, can cause dodgy connections.

Just to dig this up, I had a look at the plugs/sockets on the back of the headlights, and they seem like they are a bit corroded and falling apart...safe bet that this is the fix.

Think I may try source some more from pickapart or something, i assume they are pretty generic in terms of the wiring, a ground, a highbeam and a low beam wire?

Pretty much. Buy new ones, they come as a plug and a few inches of wiring.
