Brand new Garrett Issues - Seized Shaft? :/

As some of the people who read the build threads will know, I have been going through a t04z (New Garrett unit) build on a 2JZ. It has a G4 and all that to suit.

Today was the first time in 4 weeks that I have had time to get some work done on it. First thing i noticed was the shaft was not spinning freely.
I injected some oil into the feed and watched it come out the drain no worries.

It feels really stiff, very resistive - more like a tight rubber seal feeling and not a metal-to-metal/grinding feel/sound. When started up again, it seemed to get worse/tighter!

In the past, its only been idled it up and ran for a maximum of 10 mins at a time for about 5 times. Before initial start up with new turbo we made sure oil was primed and flowing through the turbo (done with the help of an Accu-Sump). Feed and drain are free from obstructions.

Any suggestions and thoughts are much appreciated.

Doesnt sound to good adrian,
Pull the core out of the turbine housing,
And take compressor cover off to see if anything is obstructing it from spinning,

If nothing there it will have to be stripped so bearings, shaft and seals can be inspected

Did the engine have oil pressure while running? Steve is right in wanting to know how much oil is coming out the drain,

What oil filter is it running? I cant remember but Do you have a remote filter setup?

Hey thanks for replying!

When taking the turbo off today i had to take the core off to get to the flange bolts. When just the housing off the shaft spun freely! Seems like it was a build up of carbon from only running for 10 mins.

Since i have it off, i'm going to take it into Altech and see what they can do to clean it up and give it a check over.

I had that exact same problem ages back with my KKK K26 turbo. A wire brush and a spare 20 minutes to give it a good clean and it was sorted.

Hmmmm if this was used and a few years old i probably would too.
Since i havent really done anything other than run it a few times and look at it and go ooooooo i better not :P

Well, dropped off the turbo to Alltech today. Waiting to see what they have to say about this.

    Oil Supply - restrictor for ball-bearing turbo


There are mixed comments about the restrictor. How can i determine if its needed? Or if its a DBB then no matter what, use a restrictor?

A very generalised reply but I have always read that if running a ball bearing turbo, you should use the supplied restrictor, with a -3 line.

For bush bearing turbos, no restrictor and a -4 line, due to the extra lubrication they require.

The supplied one? So sincemine didnt come with a restictor i dont need one? :o

My GT30 has the restrictor built in, and so does not need an external one.

maybe your is the same?
