SW20 S54 gearbox whine

Postby GDII » Mon Jul 09, 2012 9:46 pm

So the gearbox in my MR2 sounds like a quiet race box when its got engine load on it. It has been doing it for years. Probably as long as I've had the car. 4 years or so.

Is there anything to be concerned about or is it just the normal sound of the box and being in an MR2 making it louder than a front engine car

I quite like the sound   but just wondered if it it was bad.

As long as the oil level is fine, and it doesnt get worse it's fine. If it gets worse, get a spare one ready asap

It hasn't got any worse and the oil levels are fine. I should probably do another oil change seeing as I have enough oil sitting there to be used.

LSD box would be great. Lose a lot of corner speed when the inside wheel starts spinning.

I have never driven a well setup turbo car but I would like to get more power out of my car. I like the instant response my current NA gives so a BEAMS would be a nice upgrade. I'd like to drive a turbo MR2 just to see how it drives.

The only turbo cars I have driven is an '04 Holden Rodeo which had the worst turbo lag ever! and a 93 Legacy RS BC5 which was faster than my car on boost but took too long to get there.

check that it has the special rubber tipped bolt in the carrier bracket for the long driveshaft on the back of the motor. I hear they might cause the sort of noises you are talking about.

I don't have this bracket. My left axle is longer with no carrier bearing. That's for turbos only.
