AE86 drift setup

Can someone recommend a suspension setup for an ae86 for drift use?

I've tried google'ing but searching drift+ae86+suspension results in much spam.

Car has 3s beams, hilux rear. But the suspension is pretty much untouched.
It has BC Gold coilovers, and I believe the spring rates are 8F 4.5R

Just like to know what parts make a difference, and what parts do bugger all.

Car has a half cage, but this will be replaced with a full cage.

What is the go to shop in Christchurch for this type of thing?

Go see simon at SURFAB, he is pretty much the man. his number is on surfab.co.nz

Castor arms, roll center adjusters, possibly lengthen / rose joint adjustable Lower control arms, power steering steering arms (or t3), adjustable panhard rod, rose jointed rear 4 link arms or possibly equal 4 links, rack spacers.


Simon did my adjustable rose jointed bottom arms, roll cage extentions, and equal length 4 links, wilwood pedal mounts and removed the rear tire well among many other wee jobs. All awesome stuff.

why dont ya take it to a few drift days and decided what it is you want to change about how it behaves, then do some research on how to make that happen?

making a whole bunch of mods without driving it between times (or beforehand) means you dont really know if each change has made it better to drive or not right?

I hear what you're saying. I've drifted a few silvias at practise days so I have some sense of what needs doing. That said, the rear end of the hachi has me scratching my head at this point. Just having coil overs doesn't make for great slider in a silvia. Was just interested in others setups and opinions.

AJPS thread in rack spacer or similar w/ PS steering arms

Theres definately more extreme options but this setup works pretty good!

I have been drifting for a few years now and set up quite a few AE86's. This is the setup I curently use in my SR20 KE70

I dont do alot of drifting but I have got a bit of motorsport experience and was amazed how easy it is to drift an 86 on a really basic suspension setup. I have 8kg F, 6kg R, TRD springs and shocks. Rose jointed rear end with some nolathane bushes splashed around and thats it. Even with factory wheel alignment settings its just so predictable and for just having some fun on club days it works mint. I have got a really good diff which probably helps.

this^ will be a good starting point. then tweak it from there.
and the usual 8kg / 6kg combo, plus a good diff. proper 2 way or locker, not factory hilux. will get it sliding pretty good.
