Will a 200mm clutch fit on other 4age flywheels (blacktop)??

Postby AE86fan » Fri Oct 12, 2012 9:53 am

Can i use my TRD AE86 clutch on a blacktop flywheel? does it just mean I wouldn't be using all of the surface area available on the flywheel face or do the mounting dowels and bolt holes not line up?

Any help appreciated, cheaper option than buying a new flywheel.

i THINK** as long as both clutch and flywheel are the same size then theres no problems
The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."

AE86 is 200mm
Blacktop is 212mm.

I think he is asking can you use the smaller plate on the bigger flywheel?

Not sure if the Ae86 Pressure plate would fit,
or if there is any point of the TRD clutch plate without the matching pressure plate.

No thats kinda my question.....if the clutch is for a 200mm flywheel and I put it on a 212mm flywheel where are the differences? Is it just extra diameter on the surface of the flywheel or are the flywheels different in the the way the clutch mounts to the flywheel.....

I have probably confused everyone in how I tried to explain that...english is my first language believe it or not.

Planning on using the 200mm TRD pressure and clutch plate, just not sure if it would work on the 212mm flywheel.

is there some reason not to use the 200mm flywheel?

instincts say it wont work, but dunno for sure.

What gearbox that is it going into?

If its a RWD gearbox it might not have enough clearance for the 212mm flywheel/pressure plate, or the correct spline.

I can definitely tell you later on this afternoon for sure if it'd work, i've got both in the garage, did some actual test fitting years ago of swapping clutch components to see what'd work.

as i recall i put a 212mm flywheel into my T50 when i replaced the clutch. its the K series boxes that need to be attacked with a grinder to make it work

T50 gearbox. Its really just to save money. I've built a nice NA 16v and want to put a light flywheel in it but dont want to fork out $400 for a Chrome Moly one. I reckon a 6Kg blacktop flywheel would be better than putting a 8 Kg bluetop flywheel into it.

I have had a 200mm flywheel lightened in the past but it turned into a shocker as whoever lightened it machined the surface that the clutch sits on and the clutch clearences were screwed and the clutch never felt right, so not keen to lighten a standard flywheel again.

I hadnt thought of whether the flywheel would fit in the bellhousing, I thought that only the gze flywheels were too big for a T50....

im guessing that the ringgear will still line up on the starter regardless of the the flywheel size??

Im surprised the question hasnt been asked before but I guess if most people use the 212mm flywheel they would use the 212 clutch as well.

the 200 and 212 flywheels are actually the same diameter i think, just the engagement area is larger on the later ones. i didnt know the GZEs got a bigger flywheel / clutch though.

Yes, the ring gear diameters are exactly the same.

However the 200mm pressure plate won't fit the 212mm flywheel, the locating dowels are wider spaced (220mm compared to the 200mm spacing of the 200mm flywheel). So looks like you'll possibly have to fork out for either a 200mm flywheel or heavy duty 212mm clutch. I'll flick pics up of my findings later

i think hes got a 200mm flywheel, he just wants to use a blacktop one to save a few kg

Thanks crispy, that answered my question. I will just stick with the standard 200mm flywheel and get the engine in the car...it was the last thing I was holding off on.

Still need a throttle linkage if anyone has one for 20v ITB's.

bit late but I would imagine if the 16v and 20v BT clutch plates is the same size then using the BT flywheel/pressure plate with the 16v clutch plate would work.
