20v silvertop ecu and loom running a 16v

Postby crispy'86 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:39 pm

So to all out there that have done a 20v conversion on ke70/ae70/ae85/ae86, you've all run the 20v engine, loom etc. I'm thinking ahead and may need to use something to run my 16v race motor on quads if i have troubles with carburettor reliability, (mikuni solexes).
I've got a 20v silvertop loom and manual ecu sitting gathering dust, and i'm a tight-arse so son't want to fork out for an aftermarket ecu.
It's a 16v 4age ,has reasonably big trd cams, high compression pistons. modded dizzy. just don't want to get rid of the 20v electrics if i can make use of them if needed.
Can the ecu be changed internally to run a map sensor off a blacktop if needed easily? I always do my own work so i can tackle this. Just want to know if anyone is in the same boat as me and have parts at their leisure to play with. Will be going in my ae86

In building the engine for this viewtopic.php?t=83254

I found that "reasonably big cams" with ITB's = shit vacuum. Even with a decent vacuum chamber set up the V4 LEM? link ecu relied more on TPS signal to set it's tune. (or so the tuner said). this may be an issue for any factory ecu. Can't say I've seen a factory ecu run well with aftermarket cams at all actually... not to say it can't be done tho.
Instead of trying to rewire an ecu.. perhaps you could put an air box over your ITB's and run a silvertop AFM like the factory setup? this would give you the option of adding something like an apexi SAFC for like $200 (TM special) to fine tune or allow for further mods down the track.

Either way I'm keen to see how it works out for ya :)

Not yet run .

Probably be a lot easier to get hold of a blacktop ECU and loom that run MAP as standard rather than muck about with the ST ECU.
See ya

it will never run right. once you have cams and itb's on a 16v, the ve will have change too much for any standard ecu.

will have to go aftermarket ecu (a cheap g1 link running in tps mode will do) or stick with the carbs.

thanks for the input guys, after thinking about it i hadn't thought about the big cams and the valve overlap side of things,
