Trailer braking

Postby diss7 » Sat Dec 15, 2012 9:05 am

I'm having a new car trailer made early next year and I'm not sure about the options for the braking.

The manufacturer has advised "You will either need an electric brake controller for your tow vehicle or we will supply a drawbar mounted brake controller as part of the deal"

Are there pro's and con's of either setup?

My setup doesn't legally require brakes, as the car and trailer will be well under 2000kg, but I wanted to get regardless.

Thanks.

go the third option,

the new trailer we have and all the good racecar trailers I have seen lately have the vehicle mounted type onboard the trailer,
Downside is you need tail lights on to make the brakes work,
but that also means you can turn them on/off easy enough,

Upside is that it can be towed with any vehicle, you dont need to fit a controller to everything you tow with, as there will always be a time when you tow it with something else, or someone else tows it,
and is better than the usual trailer mounted type as you get variable braking depending on how hard you brake,
rather than the normal trailer mount type which you have to get before you drive off according to load on the trailer.

Last car trailer I had used the lights cable to engage the brakes. Same as above? I never saw any controller, but I guess I wasn't looking. Seemed pretty simple. Only downside is if the plug doesn't work on your tow vehicle like mine

What are you towing with? All the vehicles i've used have had a 'rated' tow capacity of around 750KG unbraked. Doesn't leave much for a car + trailer combo.

You're right. I was only looking at the trailer rules, didn't think to look at what the vehicle can take.
