How do you "widen" fuel hose?

Had to replace a length of fuel hose on the car to get it on the road again. Took off the old one off and went to ripco to buy an identical replacement. Got that....
Now I've worked out that the the fuel filter that was used in my car has a larger inlet than the line coming from the tank at the back. So the 1/4in hose fits correctly over the fuel line, but for the life of me I can't get it onto the filter.
Looking at the old one and they managed to expand it to fit. I've tried warming the hose up with tap hot water and gently heating it with a hot air gun. Extremely limited success.

HELP. What do I have to do to widen the hose so that it will go on the filter? Can it be done "safely" or is this dodgy? Should I just try to replace the filter?

have used boiling hot water successfully in the past. end of hose submerged in boiled water for a good couple of minutes so its warmed throughout.

Have used long-nose pliers in the past.. jam them down the pipe after heating in water and then try and open the jaws.
Have also used a nail punch forced down the pipe then left the pipe with punch in place to soak in the hot water for a bit. worked a treat but I reccomend using a rag when pulling out the punch

haha but yea its weird that that one side of the filter is bigger than the other side. getting a different one is probably an easy way to go if you cant force it on.

The filter has same size inlet and outlet. It's the fuel line that is smaller.

So, I should really just get a filter with 1/4in inlet and outlet, but if I'm being cheap/lazy I just need more heat, and maybe some lube.. LOL!

On this vein. I actually have a filter meant for a 4age'd corolla but it has threaded inlet and outlet "sockets", for lack of a better description.
Does anyone have a photo, or can someone explain how the Toyota filter was "fitted"?

Could use a fuel hose adapter of some sort if someone makes one? Should be cheaper than a new fuel filter...

Might give you a general idea. One of the worst jobs I did on my car, not far behind CV boots. It didn't want to come out that's for sure.
