AW11 Fuel System (track/drag car) - surge issues?

Postby gmacrae » Mon Jun 24, 2013 11:07 pm

Hey you lot, I'm building an AW11 up for track and drag work and wondering about how everyone has found the stock (type) system to perform in regards to fuel surge, side to side and front rear.

It will at least have a larger in tank pump and lines, but If the stock tank and pickup perform fine under heavy G's and don't allow much slosh then I'd like to steer clear of a surge tank setup if possible.

What are your experiences?

Cheers!

I only get surge once the fuel light comes on and and I've done a couple more laps. Probably only got between 5 and 10 litres in it when it does surge. Only after long braking at Taupo like the end of the drag strip straight and pit straight. Can't think of any other places that it happens but it is very short on fuel by then.

Given the fuel tank is long and skinny and located in the tunnel they are very good with sideways g forces. could get small amount of surge under heavy braking possibly but you'll never be full throttle and heavy braking at the same time...

never had any problems with surge on my aw so should be fine

Cool cheers, kinda figured side to side wouldn't be an issue but now wondering about surge while leaving the line with slicks, the car will be pretty quick - any aw11 drag cars in here these days?

That's right but coming out of a corner and back on the throttle is where the problem surfaces. I start to accelerate and then it'll die for a second or two which is when others come very close to running into you!! Enough fuel and it doesn't happen. Surge tank would fix it but a couple of exta kilo's of fuel isn't going to make that much difference and is probably lighter than the surge tank and associated plumbing. Might as well just have a decent crap before you go racing.
