What does the black box under the intake hose do on 5E-FHE?

Postby markoneswift » Mon Jul 01, 2013 8:56 am

Just curious really as it doesn't appear to do anything ? It's a black plastic moulded 'chamber' that hangs underneath the hose between the air filter box and the plenum chamber. I swapped my hose for one off a Tercel because my hose was split and leaking, but after realising I needed to shorten the Tercel hose I ended up needing to remove the plastic chamber. Is it some kind of oil catcher or anti-resonance chamber maybe ? I presume I'm not going to miss it !!!

Most likely a resonator. Not going to affect anything except intake sound. As long as you have blocked off the hole so it doesn't suck in unfiltered air.

According to toyodiy your engine doesn't have that box but the 5EFE does.

If the resonant chamber is between filter and intake manifold (sometimes built into the intake manifold i.e. altezza 3sge) - it is designed to help make a smooth/broader power band.
Keep it

If the resonant chamber is before the filter it is designed to reduce intake noise/droning
Remove it if you want to but it won't make car go faster

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

So replacing a stock intake pipe with resonators between the airbox and TB with a straight pipe without resonators modifies the power band?

Thanks as always guys - the hose that came with the car had been butchered to fit so I assume that if the 5e-fhe doesn't have a chamber, the butchered hose must have been off something else. It had a U-shaped chamber between filter casing and manifold.

The replacement hose ( again butchered, but done better ! ) needed to be shortened to fit so I cut away the section of hose which had the outlet for the chamber. The hose now connects direct from manifold to filter casing with no holes or chambers :-)

I think I do remember reading somewhere that chambers like these are used to smooth out airflow and reduce pressure differences in the air stream - might be a load of crap, but I'm sure I remember that from somewhere !
