Battery Problems

Postby spoonza6 » Tue Jan 28, 2014 12:31 pm

Car - Corolla GT Ae82

Before my fuel pump died out, my car used to start no problem n that.
Pump died and car was left not running for over a month, pump got fixed, battery got charged and, now

Dash fully lights up, turn key n the car starts cranking slowly and sometimes it catches n starts, most times it just dies
Roll starts fine.

Can drive on it fine, but once stopped it's a lucky stupid it will start, hence why I forever park on hills

Went to one second hand battery place n tried one of his n the car did nothing, then his mechanic said it's my starter motor

Don't wanna buy a brand new battery if it's the starter n vice versa

Any ideas?

Charge battery on a known good charger (or jumper leads off car with a good charging system) and take into a decent auto sparky, they should have a load tester and can tell you if the battery is good or not.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

My old man's AE82 did this exact same thing, was a worn starter motor. Cranked fine sometimes but then super slowly others, or just clicked.

Calcium battery?

As above charge it properly and get it load tested first, check power and earth for voltage drop when loaded. That will give you direction towards a faulty starter.

Had this problem in my AE82, but it never turned over properly, just clicked.

The problem is that there is no relay to the starter solenoid, so all the little wires going via the key barrel with old plugs introduce enough voltage drop that the solenoid never fires properly.
I fixed it by putting a wire straight from the battery --> relay --> starter solenoid, with the relay triggered by the old wire that use to go to the starter solenoid.

Has worked every time since.

Get battery tested.
Bypass problem areas to eliminate potential issues. Use jumper leads to replace/test power and earths, 12V from battery direct to starter trigger etc.
Or just waste money on what you think might be the problem.

Yeah I'd put money on it being that battery dude - when it was here it went flat pretty quick (if its the same battery you have in it now).
You can try a spare battery I have if you want?
