Brakes!

Ok this is driving me nuts!! I have an annoying little noise coming from both front wheels. I have checked EVERYTHING I can think of, and have basically narrowed it down to a little bit of play in the caliper sliding bolts. The noise appears if I rock the caliper when everythings done up tight. I have chucked some proper grease in but doesnt seem to be making much difference.

Do I need to pull them right out again and regrease, or if theres play in there is it replacement time?? Or am I just barking up the wrong tree?

What sort of noise?

Calipers are supposed to have a little play in them.

Is it a click/clunk kind of noise? Do the pads float a bit against where they seat?

Its really hard to explain! Yeah I would say its a light clunk sorta, thats metal on metal and taking up slack....if that makes any sense Oh and seem to seat fine. Thought that might have originally been the problem but sound still there with factory pads.

So if I spin the wheel forwards it only does it once, but if I rock it back and forwards it happens everytime it changes direction. Also doesn't do it when caliper is removed. Does it with stock pads and EBC redstuff, and new rotors as well as the stock ones that have been machined.

Do you still have the sprigs that the pads slide against?

Yes I still have everything as it came, down to the anti-rattle plate thingys.

Just pulled everything apart (again) and put it back together, and when everything is all ready to go but haven't touched the brake pedal (so pads arent hard against disc) it doesn't do it. Has factory pads and discs in at the moment. Not even OEM replacements, they are all the factory parts from new

Maybe it's a sign I should have just bit the bullet and bought the Akebono 4pot/2pot upgrade

Mine makes a 'click' sound the very first time I brake in the morning (coming out of the driveway) and also once when I brake during reversing. My Dad's ST202 Celica did the exact same thing, as did his Toyota Vitz and a few other Toyotas we've had. It's normal as far as I'm concerned. Just the pads/pistons moving during the initial press of the brakes for the day. Unless it's doing it every time you press the brakes I wouldn't worry about it.

Ahhh yeah i'm trying to confuse people at that point I had the wheel off, and so if I then spin the hub it makes noise at those points.

When driving, it seems to happen a bit also when I am on/off the power, but only happens at low speed (or can't hear it at higher speeds )

Such a hard thing to describe! Have a wof booking at the local mechanic tomorrow so will ask his opinion

Do the pads sit tight in the locating bracket? If they are loose you will get a clunk with them moving. Is there any dowels on the pad steel backing? As in piston or outer part of caliper not sitting flat against the pads?

More likely the case with non oem pads, have been caught out once or twice.

Yep, pads are VERY tight, absolute bitch to get in. Also was happening with OEM pads, only done 44km so will be factory ones.

Have got OEM pads in now, I cleaned sliders with brake clean and polished them, then regreased. Still could feel it when jacked up, but has improved heaps when driving since last night. Will reinstall the EBCs and hope it was the sliders!
