Ticking noise in rear brakes

Postby mat » Fri May 16, 2014 4:50 am

hey guys, been following this forum for a long while but had nothing of any value to contribute till now.
Recently bought a z20 soarer and the rear brakes have a horrible ticking noise. It sounds like a stone in the tread of one of the rear tyres but when I pull on the handbrake the noise goes away, ive pulled the rear callipers and disk off but I cant figure out where the noise is coming from, im not sure weather its coming from the drum brake setup in the disk or what? Have any of you guys had something similar?

So it runs an integral handbrake ie, seperate cable etc?

If the noise disapears when hb is applied the handbrake assembly would be first place to check. If your uncertain what side get someone to drive while your in the back seat or run on axle stands. All you can do is strip it down and look for anything obvious, retaining springs, backplate, rubbing wear marks on drum etc. Get someone to work the handbrake and make sure the shoes are spreading and returning fully etc.

Noises like that can be tricky to find but obviously a stationary part interferring with a rotating part..

Had same issue as described, pulled discs off, disassembled handbrake insides and then reassembled and noise continued. Took it to someone who worked at a Brake place and after a quick drive diagnosed that the rear discs were warped.

Replaced discs and noise was gone.

bit of play in the wheel bearing might cause an issue also, worth checking anyway
