Clunk in right front - Caldina 4WD

Postby Steve65 » Thu Oct 09, 2014 2:52 pm

Hi All,

Have searched the forum however given the problem its a bit difficult to know what to search this as....hoping someone may have had a similar experience.

When driving forward from stationary position I get this intermittent "clunk" coming from right front hub area. Caliper has been checked, bearing is ok and play in CV is acceptable.

Clunk is intermittent and can some times be heard when changing up after having slowed.

Appreciate any constructive suggestions.

Cheers

Ball joint? Or bushes. My MR2 had a clunk when changing up gears, turns out it was the ball joint. Although this was in the rear it is still a driven wheel as is the front of your car.

check engine/gearbox mounts too, usually the rubber portion can become separated from the outer steel part and it just moves all over the place

My 1997 GT-T has this exact problem.

My mechanic thinks it's a flat spot on the bearing in my case. The CV joint is also shagged so is getting replaced.
He said if it's not either the bearing or CV joint, it could be the center diff locking up and clanging intermittently.

Do you find it happens more often in the wet?
