4AGE blacktop - run bearing: recommendations for rebuild?

Postby Ninja25t » Sun Nov 02, 2014 11:19 pm

Unfortunately a trip back from Tauranga in my AE111 BZ-R today ended on the back of a tow truck with a run bearing. I still have to get it apart and weigh up my options (transplant or recon) but should I go ahead with reconditioning I was wondering if there are any upgrades I should consider while its apart? Noting that its going to remain a daily drivers so I'm not chasing any huge power increases or going forced induction. However, I plan to continue doing the odd track day so a bit of future proofing wouldn't hurt :-)

Any thoughts/comments greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shane

Shot peened rods, check for cracks etc, and balance everything. Will ensure you have a good base for later power increases.

Also perhaps think about a crank girdle, but its getting pricey at this point.

Silvertop rods would be the only change i would make.
Leave everything else standard, it will remain reliable.

FIGURE OUT WHY! Or at least your best guesstimate. Overheat, low or too thick or too thin or too much lube, old & tired/loose or rebuilt too tight, too many cold unprimed startups, G-forces, tired pump, stuck relief, whatever.

Intake, cam, compression & exhaust mods.
Crank girdle is just insane.

Yeah - sliver top rods
Got Marsh Motorsports to machine my blacktop block and balance crank/flywheel/rods
He asked if they were "race or special" items as the factory balance for all the bits was so good!
"Not perfect but not too far off"
If the crank is damaged, all 4age cranks are the same except the very early 4age ones (bluetop has smaller bearing journals)
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Not really. He asked for suggestions of things to do to it now while its out, with the potential to up the power later on. Not even improvement needs to result in more power right away.

What is max power before you think you need one? I've never heard of people even putting them into highly strung 4agte motors. Is it common and just not talked about much?

Thanks for the comments so far, well mostly :-D

My last 3 cars were turbo's, 2 RB's. The naturally aspirated AE111 is less powerful and slower (in a straight line) but much more fun to drive on a daily basis in almost every other respect, especially considering what it owes me (its about to owe a bit more)... If $$$ should ever permit and I can convert it entirely to a project car I might consider chasing bigger power but more likely I would switch to a RWD platform instead :-)

Cheers
