Possessed indicators!!

Postby Mr Revhead » Sat Jan 31, 2015 7:41 pm

So lacking knowledge in black magic, aka electrics, I thought I'd see what some of you think...

In the mighty MU r/h indicator results in very rapid cycling of the relay, NO lamps at all lighting up, including dash lamp. L/H is fine.
Put on hazards, L/H only flash! Inc the L/H only dash lamp 8O
Likely to be the relay, or some weird earthing issue?

im no expert, but

if a bulb dies the indicator normally blinks faster, presumably the more current flowing the slower it blinks?

so id start by looking for an earth or looking for a broken connection from the relay working towards the bulb.

OR can you swap the sides of the car the relay is wired to? that would prove the relay out if the problem swapped sides when you swapped the wiring?

I'm sure someone will come up with a better idea...

As above. On older cars if a bulb goes the rest will quicken. So given none go there must be a break in the circuit after the switch and relay

Dirty contacts in the indicator switch would be first guess,

Is the hazard switch part of the column switch or separate on those?

I dunno. Guess I should have a look. So far I've wiggled the lever a bit and smacked the dash in some strategic places :P

Chocolate fish to you! Pulled it apart and cleaned the rocker switch, woks fine now. I didn't really look, but I think the wiring for the hazards runs through the same circuit board behind the rocker.

I'm going to remember this for when it happens to me!

Had a similar issue with the lights on my Celica, for years they would suddenly act weird by not shining and a high beam light would come on.

Each time I changed the switch column or cleaned the contacts it would then work OK for a few months.
After 6yrs of swapping switches and cleaning contacts etc I stumbled on the true cause of the problem - the harness plug pins had corrosion on them.

I suggest you inspect the harness plug if this happens again
