5E-FHE - valve stem seals causing startup smoke ?

Postby markoneswift » Tue Jun 30, 2015 10:43 am

Hey all, quick question about my 5E-FHE smoking on cold start. It plumes out blue smoke for about ten seconds and then settles down and doesn't smoke under acceleration ( unless really booting it lol ). I'm just wondering what you guys think - valve stem oil seals at fault ?? Engine has done 299K kms so I guess it could be other things like rings / bore wear etc. If it is the seals, would it cost a huge amount to get them replaced whilst having cambelt done ( which is due soon ) ?? Would you recommend a compression test to check for condition of rings etc ?

That does sound like the valve stem seals to me, I know mine are shot and it will do that every other start

Also if you have it sitting there idling for several minutes and it begins to puff blue smoke that is also another sign the VSS's are shot, something to do with the vaccuum or pressure in there dragging oil past them into the cylinder, someone else can explain it better im sure :)

As for cost Hopefully someone else will know as I have not looked at getting mine replaced as yet

I did mine recently on my GEN2 3SGE. The cost was under $100 in parts and did the work myself. I did require a few special tools.
See here for what I did. viewtopic.php?f=29&t=67411&start=60#p962297
This is probably a better description of the process here although I didn't follow it completely. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=93501 and http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showth ... DIY-How-To

I didn't have the symptoms you have so changing them didn't do anything. If anything the smoke is worse so I'm suspecting rings and bores or something worse.
