No oil pressure at cold start blacktop 4age

Postby andrewgreen1000 » Sun Sep 13, 2015 12:11 am

So I'm a bit worried about the oil pressure in the GT.

After leaving if overnight, and cold starting it, the idiot light stays on for a good couple of seconds after the car starts. This only happens on cold starts, any subsequent start and its fine. even if I just turn it off, and then back on again. There are funky noises coming from the engine too, so I'm pretty sure Its not a sensor fault. I thought the anti-drainback valve might have failed in the ryco filter, so changed the oil, went up weight from 10w40 to 15w40 and new filter, but it doesn't seem to have helped. It seemed to start fairly soon after I got the cam-belt and water-pump changed, or maybe after I got a few oil seals replaced, dizzy, oil filter pedestal, and rocker covers, a few weeks after, as it was leaking like a sieve. Any ideas as to what else may be causing it? Am rather worried that it will be causing permanent damage.

Cheers
Andrew

I take it that you don't run a filter relocation kit or an oil cooler?

Did you put the same brand of filter back on?

Nope nothing extra.

I changed from a ryco filter to a sakura, probably should have gone for a Toyota, one but wasn't able to get one easily/quickly.

Sakura filters are shithouse.
Ryco have a anti drain back valve at least.

Genuine ones are best.

Stink, I hadn't had a problem with them in the past on my old silvertop, so I thought I'd give them a go on this just to change up the brand, as I usually use ryco's.

Ryco are usually pretty good, I'd look at getting a proper pressure gauge on to it ASAP to confirm actual pressure. How many k's has it done?
Also I would have thought a 15w40 would adversely affect cold start oil pressure

Roger that will try and get it to a real mechanic with a pressure gauge asap hardest part is actually showing them I guess as it only happens on the first dead cold start. Car has done 182ish ks.

I went up an oil grade to try and slow the oil use/burning between changes, which hasn't been out of the ordinary amounts for a blacktop, but I thought I'd give it a go.

Instead of stepping up to a 15w you should be stepping down. the higher the first number the thicker the oil is when cold and harder for your oil pump to pump therefor slower to reach the innards of your engine.

If a thicker oil is required to minimise oil use when hot then you need to find a compromise oil a 5w-40 or something similar to help at cold start.

As we get closer to summer :D it will become less of a issue as the oil will be warmer and thinner at cold start

You could always wire a momentary cut off button into the ecu power or the IGT output so that the engine cranks till your happy there is pressure then starts?

So I'm looking for a new mechanic who will actually talk to me/I dont have to just talk to a receptionist, in the Morningside, Auckland area, any ideas? Doesn't have to be super close if there is someone that is good/not super expensive.

I suppose I could write in a switch and use it as an immobiliser aswell, but that's just masking the problem rather than fixing it. I'll also see how it goes coming into summer. I'm not using the car everyday so not too much of an issue.

Wiring a switch to the IGT is not a great idea, as if it send 4 signals on the IGT wire and gets no response on the IGF it will stop sending the signals and log a code.
This means the car wont go when you switch the switch back on until you have switched the key off and back on again.

Same with the power feed to the coil wire.

For the price of a genuine filter I'd try that as a fix,
otherwise I'd just live with it or change the oil back to what it was.

Yeah your right about the IGT defeat, had forgotten about throwing an error code - ecu or coil power works though, have done that before.

As you say, best bet is to fix the issue rather than a band aid solution

yeah I'll grab a new TGP filter soon, want to grab a few other things at the same time, so will have to wait for next payday! I will report back to see if it fixes it! I'm still just hoping that it's not bearings, or something really $$$.

I have two silvertops in family and both of them rattle on cold startup even with genuine filters.
I believe it is due to worn bearings and only thing that can help (without bearing change) is either have accusump, primer pump and/or IGT/Fuel pump defeat circuit tied into oil pressure light.
