Rebuilding turbo, possibly DIY?

Postby 92mr2paddy » Mon Oct 12, 2015 8:10 pm

so my supras turbo has started using lots of oil after track day and hard driving under boost, opened up intake/pod and as suspected full of oil residue from the compressor housing, it doesnt blow smoke when running/boosting so presuming rear housing seals are ok.

now question is, its a big presumably fake/cheap turbo with garrett wheels gt42.(bought it like 6 years ago but has done less than 1000ks) is it possible to just put new seals in and if so how easy is that or will i need to take it to a shop for a proper rebuild, rather not do this as id rather use that money towards a proper garrett or Precision turbo.

Turbo oil leaks are almost always because something is blocked
- check oil drain from turbo back to engine
- make sure engine breather system is working properly
Problems with the above increase pressure in the turbo oil cavities and push oil past the seals into the compressor or the turbine.
- check air intake filter isn't blocked
Problems here crease lower pressure in the compressor and help to suck oil past the seals

Good info here http://turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/oil_leakage

Good luck
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

cheers, the filter (big K&N) is quite dirty but only from the oil coming out of compressor (so will clean this), will check drain but its a straight down dash -12 line so shouldnt be a problem there, the breather is going into a catch can from both covers no more pvc valve as aftermarket intake, i have read some people plumb the catch can back into intake to create a vacuum inside the covers but other havent and both these options work for some people so not sure weather to change this?
