Inner rack end - no lock washer?

Postby RS13 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 7:59 pm

Just changed the inner rack end and tie rod end on our RunX due to WOF failure, however noticed that the rack ends on these cars don't have a locking washer as I'd normally expect with such a job.

I feel I'm being a little overly fussy, but other than "F.T", does anyone have a listed torque figure for these rack ends? Having difficulty finding anything online.

Cheers!

Thanks mate, yeah same.. cranked it up with 1/2" powerbar as well so I'm happy that its' tight, would be nice to know for sure that I've done it up to spec!

Tighten it up Ft until it breaks, then replace it & tighten the new one up just a little bit less

Well as it turned out, I replaced everything then took it back in for a recheck.. no go, play still there. Turns out the rack itself has radial play on the right hand side only, an issue well known for these cars (there is a plastic bush in both ends of the rack housing that wears out) so I had to remove the entire steering rack and send it in to get overhauled. Something to watch out for in the e12* Corollas with electric power steering!

Blue arrow indicates the plastic bush (rack is in the middle, has been pushed through). No stock of the bushes themselves in NZ either, most repair places I spoke to machine up new ones themselves.

Surprisingly, not too bad! As the electric motor is on the steering column, its' effectively a manual rack with no hydraulic connections to get in the way. Rear engine mount had to come out and swaybar disconnected at each end so that I could feed it out the side, otherwise it was really straightforward and only took a couple of hours all up. Most time was spent measuring the steering geometry to get it back in the right place as the steering recon shop had cleaned off my alignment marks! lol.
