Hello and question on ECU/OBDII

Postby Technohedge » Fri Apr 01, 2016 10:14 am

Hi all, recently bought a Caldina GTT, my first Toyota. Love it to bits but as any older vehicle im gonna spend next few weeks sorting all the niggly bits out that need fixing.

:D I want to use a Bluetooth OBDII adaptor with torque, but I know with most of these that the connector wont directly speak to the car, and info I have found shows that I need to connect a pin on the adapter to pin 11 on the 22 pin connector on the ECU, then a couple of grounds and a +12V on some other pins of the adapter to get the signal to read.

Couple of noob questions -

- where is the ECU on these? I had heard it was under passenger footwell but all I found there was a couple of aftermarket tv tuner units :)

- IS pin 11 already populated and so do I have to splice into the wire or can I go straight onto the pin?

Will be interesting to see if you can get it to work - I tried using Torque with a bluetooth adaptor on my Altezza, and it wouldn't comunicate

As far as I know the Toyota OBDII connector is not a real "OBDII" in a sense that beyond basics (error codes, maybe tacho signal) you will not get anything out.

Toyota historically has been very secretive about the internals of their engine management systems.

My mind was blown when I realized that I can access and change almost every single parameter in my STI with just a OBDII to USB cable and some free software.

So if you want to tinker with ECU (or even get anything useful data out of it) then you chose wrong brand ;).

I use an UltraGauge in the Aurion which is connected to the OBDII port under the dash and it displays the RPM, speed, engine temp, intake temp, battery voltage, MAF, throttle position etc, so it really just depends on your car.

I find that on earlier Toyotas they have an OBDII port under the dash but they also have an OBDI 'diagnosis' box in the engine bay. If you have the box in the engine bay then chances are any Bluetooth adapter won't work in the port under the dash because the pins aren't all in the same place.

Pretty sure our scantool at work reads live data from the ODB plug on the Caldina's,
had one at work last week with the common speedo/tacho problem.
so they do have the capability.

But for the price of the tool you'd expect it to.
