i notice you have never had anything done by the above mentioned fabricators gdsup- while their craftmanship is awesome- value for money is also somehting that a lot of people are looking for. If all you are after is the mother of all rollcages and to able to say you got it done at such and such a place then fine, be a blow ass. If on the other hand you are looking for some good quality while still working on a budget then i suggest shopping around and be specific with wat you intend using your car for and what kind rollcage they can offer you. make sure you get a written quote.

Well, Herbert Fabrication is a little out of my price range. I am trying to avoid towing to Auckland if I can as well. I do need a proper cage though to keep my valuable little head safe

So.. how much can I expect to pay for a half cage for a 4dr R32? And it'll get wofs', even though I'm ripping out the back seats?

As long as you remove the seatbelts etc aswell then you won't have a problem. I rang LTSA to find out wether I could do this in my Supra and still get a WOF and they said as long as seats+belts etc is removed aswell then there should be no problems.

Marks work is simply the best, but yes he charges for it. Horses for courses i guess. There was one of his top young guys who broke away and now does his own work at much less $$. Cant remember his name though...

my vote to go Timo in Palmerston North.. the shop is Octane Automotive.. all he does it cage.. awesome cage + good price! tubing is very close to body... should i say touching!

did my bolt in 5 points 1/2 cage in my TE71. awesome job. The price is cheaper than most place having welded in cage! go figure..

Callum, from the photo's of your project, you appear to have a pretty good grasp of what is involved. how about getting a kit??, fitting it and getting fully welded by a very good welder(unless you are up to the ask)

the guy that bends up all the cages i have been involved in works on the theory ' that if it dosn't fit tightly, your bodyshell is bent'.

about $400 +freight gets a kit for a basic MSNZ approved cage, and seeing as he is the MSNZ tech. officer for roll-over protection, you cant go wrong with his bending and plate size.

He is haven't heard anyone complain about his work yet and quite a few positive comments at various events, used to run a wrx with the plate rolcag as thats all he used to do - is now working for mclenans in welly.
He's doing my cage for me next month some time, helps if you know his sister and old man fairly well

Is this guy down by you fangsport ? I know a few guys who have bought the basic kit from down that way and had them sent up here and fitted, only gets expensive when the guys up here start adding extra bars everywhere

I have a good grasp what I'm doing, but no skills to back it up

Preference is for a workshop experienced with all the paperwork side as well, I don't see the point in saving a few $$$ when it come to a cage for a car that has been chopped as much as mine. With the changes in the rear end as well I doubt a kit cage will match up very well. Really want to go front struts to rear coilovers with as much reinforcing as I'm allowed. Have a few "innovative" ideas to effectively carry the cage past the front strut towers too, but keep that quiet.
Will look to the southern workshops (Napier, Palmy. Levin (really impressed with Automotion I think it was who did another local car)) on a separate trip, got a few months up my sleeve before the car is ready anyway.

Gdsup, for sure there are always more bars that can be added, i used an extra length in my car, and 2 lengths into into the escort i did. for the new car, i'll only be getting the bends of him as i want to semi-spaceframe it, and the cut lengths will end up as a pile of off-cuts.

Callum, depending on the use of the Starlet, i recommend you don't carry the cage past the suspension points. if the car takes an impact to these areas, the cage could be unnecessarily be twisted, having a crumple zone with a bolt in brace( if needed) would be a better option.

Was looking at bolt in bars from the front of the strut towers down to the castor arm mounts doubling as mounts for AFM and coils. Would use weakish bolts so that would provide support in normal use but in an impact the bolts would shear and allow some crumpling.

a basic six point cage from $1050+gst, includes logbook and homologation paper work.

this guy made the cage in the holden drift car in the d1nz events, it really nice fitting, a good looking cage.

Try Neil Marshall at TMR Performance Centre in New Plymouth.
Been doing cages in club cars for 10 years.
I have been in one of his cages during a 200 kph of and the cage didnt move a bit but the car itself was distroyed.
Turn arround 1 to 4 weeks depending on complexity.
Price arround $800+gst for a basic 6 point to the sky is the limit.
If you need another testermonial talk to almost any of the Taranaki Drift guys. Neil has done most of thier cages.
